Community Movie Coming to Peacock: How Did It Happen?

The Community movie will head to Peacock after a long wait.

Six seasons and a movie! After seven long years, the Community movie is finally happening. On Friday, Peacock announced that it’s ordered the long-discussed movie based on the cult NBC comedy, which originally ran on NBC and Yahoo! Screen from 2009 to 2015.

The movie will reunite creator Dan Harmon and cast members Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. But it took a while for the Community movie to make it from throwaway gag to a reality.

How do I watch the Community movie?

The Community movie will be available on the streaming service Peacock. Peacock hasn’t announced a release date for the movie, but it’s expected to be a Peacock exclusive like Peacock’s other movies. Check out our Peacock review to learn more about the NBC streaming service.

June 2015: Community originally ends

Community ends its sixth season on Yahoo! Screen in June 2015. During interviews with TVLine at Comic-Con, Harmon and Brie both say that a movie would be way more likely than a seventh season.

July 2016: “It’ll happen.”

From Atlanta to Love, the Community cast was spread out across numerous hit TV shows and movies. In an interview with Larry King, Harmon was skeptical about writing the movie at that moment, but he believed it could happen down the road.

March 2018: Would Donald Glover do the Community movie?

At this point, questions about the Community movie had reached the “we’ve got to ask” status during any cast member interview. In a 2018 interview with IndieWire, McHale said that Harmon—who was in the middle of working on Rick and Morty—hadn’t written a script yet and that any potential Community movie would need Donald Glover.

“Getting Donald would be very hard at this point unless we had $10 million lying around for him to appear,” McHale joked to IndieWire.

November 2019: Community cast reunites

Most of Community’s main cast reunited for a panel at 2019’s Vulture Festival. In response to a question about a potential Community movie, the cast all expressed interest in doing the movie.

Spring 2020: Community heads to Netflix, cast reunites again

All six seasons of Community come to Netflix in April 2020, and the cast reunites for a charity table read the following month.

July 2021: “The only problems are becoming the creative ones.”

In an interview with the Vulture comedy podcast Good One: A Podcast About Jokes, Harmon hinted that he’d started working on the Community movie.

Summer 2022: “I will now say it’s a matter of ‘when.’”

Harmon gives one of his firmest Community movie updates, telling Newsweek in August 2022 that an outline has been created and pitched around. Although Harmon was hesitant to say more at the time, Peacock announces that it’s ordered the Community movie the following month.
