Reshma Shetty Talks Season 2 of “Royal Pains” and the Evolution of Her Character
“Royal Pains” star Reshma Shetty recently spoke to CableTV about the upcoming season of the hit medical drama.
After six successful seasons on the USA Network, Shetty and her co-stars will soon return for the series’ seventh installment, which, according to Shetty, will be much like the show’s earlier years.
“Royal Pains season six is much more lighter, its more what we were in season two and three,” Shetty told CableTV at the NBC Upfront presentation in New York City.
During its first season, the show set records for the network when it came to ratings. When the show debuted in June 2009, it received 5.57 million viewers, the highest series premiere for the USA Network since 2006’s “Psych.” The numbers resulted in the series being named as the #1 new original series on cable for that year. “Royal Pains” was also the first show in five years to increase viewership from week two to week three.
Although the new season is said to be similar in style to that of the first few, Shetty revealed that there have been more than a couple of changes since those seasons were shot. After all, following several years on the air, producers are bound to experiment with different story lines and issues.
“There are so many changes. We are a summer forward so Hank has gone away to explore the world,” Shetty revealed of season seven. “I have had a baby so I am a single mom. Paige and Evan are having counseling issues throughout the summer with their new marriage. Jeremiah is coming into his own and being a part of Hank Med. Six years is so long, ya know?”
Six years is a long time — especially these days. As television seasons come and go, so do sitcoms. From season one failures to successful shows that die off, creating a series with staying power is quite the feat, but USA has found the secret formula when it comes to “Royal Pains,” and Shetty couldn’t be happier to be involved.
“It’s so great to be a part of a show that knows its niche and knows what our audience loves and just to live these people’s lives is awesome,” Shetty shared.
As for what she likes most about her character, Divya Katdare, Shetty revealed, “She’s gone from this businesswoman and P.A. girl to suddenly a mom — a single mom — that’s pretty crazy. so, and in high heels, so the whole thing is pretty crazy.”
