TV Size and TV Distance Calculator
If you already know the distance you want to sit from your TV, but aren’t sure how large it should be, use this calculator: The calculated values above all assume you’re looking for a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it – every new TV and most computer monitors use this standard. Where did these estimates come from?
- Maximum recommended size is based on THX’s recommended viewing angle of about 40 degrees.
- Minimum recommended size is based on SMPTE’s minimum viewing angle of 30 degrees. That doesn’t mean you can’t buy a smaller TV – it just means the experience may not be as immersive.
- Recommended distance is somewhere in-between based on on resident TV expert’s experience and calculation. A 40 degree angle (the maximum size) is indeed more immersive, but it may be a little much if you need to look from one side of the screen to the other. It’s just a little too big, for example, to read sub-titles without moving your head.
