Is Verizon Fios internet good?

“Fios” may not be a real word, but Verizon’s fiber-optic internet service is legit—and fast. With download speeds peaking at 940 Mbps (megabits per second) for $89.99 a month, Verizon Fios internet leaves most of the competition in the dust, and it’s why the provider earned our Editor’s Choice award for the fastest internet option around.

The East Coast competition, that is: Verizon Fios internet service is currently available in only nine eastern US states. Like every other American internet service provider, Verizon hasn’t yet achieved full sea-to-shining-sea fiber coverage. But, if you can get it, we recommend signing up.

Why you should trust us. Our expert editors surveyed hundreds of Verizon Fios internet customers, researched pricing and speeds, and then rated it on a five-star scale according to four essential criteria:

First things first, if you can get Verizon Fios internet, jump on it. It’s fast and reasonably priced.

All of Verizon Fios’s plans are fast and relatively cheap for fiber-optic internet. We like the top-tier Fios Gigabit Connection because its blazing download and upload speeds could handle all the users and devices a household could throw at it. Buffering begone!

For fiber-optic internet, Verizon Fios internet-only prices are on the lower end of the scale. If you’re looking for a compromise between monthly cost and speed, the middle plan, Fios Internet 500/500, is your best (and, yes, only) bet.

However, we wish Verizon offered a sub-$50 internet plan for budget-minded households. These are more common among cable internet providers, but most major fiber internet service providers (ISPs) start their pricing at or above $50 per month, which can be a tougher ask for families with basic internet needs. (That said, Verizon technically offers subsidized low-income internet through its Verizon Lifeline program, but your household needs to be enrolled in a qualifying federal assistance program.)

As for the competition, many internet service providers compete with Verizon Fios for your affection (and cash). Depending on where you live, the biggest competitors are probably Optimum, Xfinity, or Spectrum.

If you’re interested in a deal, Optimum and Xfinity internet plans cost about the same as Verizon Fios’s. If you’d like to bundle your internet service with TV, Xfinity and Spectrum have some great discounts on package deals. Xfinity doesn’t have the same huge channel lineup as Verizon, but it’s not too shabby.

The big drawback to these Verizon Fios alternatives is that they’re all cable internet providers. Fiber internet is faster (especially regarding upload speeds) and more reliable, making Verizon Fios the best option, technologically speaking.

Verizon Fios has fast fiber internet performance, superb reliability

Test Score
Average latency 10.93 milliseconds
Internet reliability approval rating 76% approval
Internet speed approval rating 77% approval

As part of CableTV.com’s reliability testing, we analyze data sources like our annual Internet Customer Satisfaction Survey, testimonials from real Verizon Fios customers, and speed test data from our partners at HighSpeedInternet.com.

The numbers show why Verizon Fios earned our Editor’s Choice award for the fastest internet provider. According to HighSpeedInternet.com, Verizon Fios customers had an average latency time—which refers to how long it takes for data to physically reach your computer—of only 10.9 milliseconds, which ranked second overall among surveyed providers. Fiber internet service already means you’ll get responsive internet service, and with Verizon Fios, you’ll get best-in-class performance for a major fiber ISP. Latency will be important if your household is regularly online gaming or taking Zoom calls for work.

Verizon Fios also had top-five finishes in our internet customer satisfaction survey, as more than 75% of polled Verizon Fios customers said they were extremely satisfied with Verizon’s internet speeds and service reliability.

Verizon Fios features great bundle deals, equipment options

Verizon Fios’s fiber-optic internet provides a lot of speed for a little money—nothing to argue with here. Fiber-optic connections are the new internet gold standard, and Verizon Fios sweetens the deal by keeping its plans and pricing simple.

But there’s a lot more than comes with Fios internet besides internet service. Let’s break down Verizon Fios’ other big features and offerings below.

Verizon Fios internet, phone, and TV bundles

Package Price* Download speeds up to Channel count Details
300 Mbps + Your Fios TV $134.99/mo. 300 Mbps 125+ View Plans for Verizon
Fios Gigabit Connection + More Fios TV $198.99/mo. 940 Mbps 300+ View Plans for Verizon

Like its internet plans, Verizon Fios’s TV packages are surprisingly inexpensive, given their large channel counts. There’s even one (Your Fios TV) that can be customized to your preferences. Nice. If you bundle a qualifying Verizon cell phone plan with your internet service, you can also get an additional $10 monthly discount on your bill.

Verizon Fios Wi-Fi equipment

Verizon Fios has a few different Wi-Fi routers and gateways to cover your home in Wi-Fi internet. Don’t worry about being overwhelmed with choices, though—the Verizon team will pick out the best modem for your area and service. Every Fios plan includes a Wi-Fi router rental, and if you upgrade to 1 Gig or 2 Gig, Verizon will throw in a free Wi-Fi extender rental.

Verizon Fios availability

Verizon Fios offers great value for internet customers, but it’s only a sweet deal if you live in the right part of the Eastern Seaboard—Verizon Fios internet isn’t a nationwide service just yet. The following states have Verizon Fios service:

  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Washington, DC

What do real Verizon customers think of Verizon Fios?

As part of CableTV.com’s annual Internet Customer Satisfaction Survey, we talked to thousands of real-life internet customers to see how they felt about their internet providers.

Verizon remains one of the top fiber internet providers on the market when it comes to customer service, as it tied for fifth place in overall customer satisfaction alongside its similarly high scores for speed and service reliability. Price was one of Verizon’s only notable missteps in our survey—only 58% of Verizon customers considered Verizon to be an excellent deal compared to the competition.

I have been a Verizon customer for close to 40 years. The customer service has been fantastic for me. I have been using their internet service for close to 25 years. I had dsl, dial-up, now [I have Verizon] Fios. Could have switched but did not.

Verizon Fios internet FAQ

Does Verizon Fios internet come with a contract or extra fees?

Unlike most internet service providers, Verizon Fios requires no annual contract; you simply pay month to month. No contract also means no potential early termination fees if you suddenly need to move or drop the service.

The Verizon Fios setup fee is $99—unless you order online. Then it’s free. Also, Verizon includes a modem/router with Fios Gigabit Connection service. Internet 300/300 and Internet 500/500 come with a monthly $15 modem/router rental fee.

Why isn’t Verizon Fios internet available in my area?

While the “backbone” of the internet (yes, the whole internet) is made up of fiber optics (microscopic glass strands that transmit data as pulses of light), most “last mile” connections that go directly to homes and businesses are still made up of old copper phone lines and coaxial TV cables.

Fiber-to-premises internet is an expensive but slowly growing infrastructure; currently, less than half of the US is covered by fiber. If your neighborhood isn’t hooked up yet, internet providers like Verizon Fios are probably planning fiber expansion in your area—but it won’t happen overnight.

These states currently have Verizon Fios fiber internet:

  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Washington, DC

Does Verizon offer Wi-Fi for home?

The three Verizon Fios Wi-Fi plans cost between $49.99–$89.99/mo. and come with download speeds between up to 300–2,300 Mbps. Wi-Fi routers are included for free with every Verizon Fios plan.

Can I use my own Wi-Fi router with Verizon Fios?

While you can use your own Wi-Fi router with Verizon Fios, there’s not much reason to. You have to use a Verizon Fios Gateway to connect with Verizon’s proprietary fiber technology, and that gateway already has a Wi-Fi router inside.

So unless the Verizon Wi-Fi router isn’t performing up to your standards, you might as well use both features of the two-in-one device you’re already paying for.
