Get Ready for a SpongeBob Super Bowl on Nickelodeon This Year
The Super Bowl 2024 will be a bit greener, with the addition of a secondary broadcast on Nickelodeon promising the network’s signature green slime.
The version of the Super Bowl on Nickelodeon will be the same game as on CBS and Paramount+. It will feature graphics like the network’s orange blimp imposed over the field and classic characters like SpongeBob SquarePants.
Nickelodeon has done alternative NFL telecasts before—but never at this scale. The network previously aired wild-card playoff games in 2020 and 2021, along with a Christmas Day game in 2022 and 2023. The most recent game even included Patrick Star (from SpongeBob SquarePants) providing on-air commentary.
Nickelodeon and CBS are both part of the Paramount family, which is airing the Super Bowl live from Las Vegas this year.
Nickelodeon partners with the NFL for games each year
This is the fourth year the NFL has teamed up with Nickelodeon for a broadcast, but this year, Nickelodeon showcased two games, including the most popular television program of the year. (Nickelodeon aired a “Nickmas Game” on Christmas Day in 2023.)
“Our previous telecasts on Nickelodeon have been huge hits and created a new and different way to experience an NFL game,” NFL media executive vice president Hans Schroeder said in a statement. “We’re excited to bring that creativity to Super Bowl 58 and give our fans another way to enjoy one of the world’s most popular sporting events.”
Nickelodeon has partnered with the NFL for Super Bowl Coverage before—but never during the game. The network created two Super Bowl pregame specials (in 2004 and 2021) before it began airing actual NFL games in January 2021.
Nickelodeon Super Bowl coverage will stream live
In 2021, the network began airing a weekly NFL series called NFL Slimetime. The series streams on Paramount+ throughout the NFL season.
“As we’ve shown with our prior zeitgeist-busting Wild Card and Nickmas coverage, combining the absolute excitement of NFL action with the creativity that can only come from Nickelodeon’s cool POV makes for a must-see event for kids and families everywhere,” Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon CDO Brian Robbins said in a statement.
The Nickelodeon Super Bowl broadcast will stream live, but it will air in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand on a tape delay.
