Charter closed a $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications in August 2026. The combined company’s network reaches across 45 states and serves roughly 37 million customers.
As part of the merger, Spectrum’s parent company will adopt the Cox Communications corporate name — but every service you buy stays branded Spectrum, in every market. The company name and the brand name are about to diverge.
Spectrum’s structural difference from Xfinity and Optimum isn’t the network. It’s the contract philosophy: no contracts, no data caps, no early termination fees. The tradeoff is no long-term price lock either.

Spectrum’s no-contract policy thankfully puts it in line with other providers these days. However, you won’t be able to get an extended price-lock guarantee unless you bundle multiple Spectrum services together.
- No ETF, no data caps, no contract. Leave whenever you want without a penalty.

- The Broadcast TV Surcharge is the fee to watch. It’s around $25/mo. today, up from $17.99/mo. in 2022 — a roughly 39% climb via incremental hikes, including one single 20% increase. A separate Sports Surcharge runs $10–$15/mo. depending on your local market.

Better together: bundling with Spectrum
Spectrum’s real advantage isn’t any single product. It’s what happens when you stack two or three of them.
- Single bill, single login. One account instead of three, which matters more than people admit until they’ve managed three.

What you need to know before signing up with Spectrum
Time your renewal call
Call retention 60–90 days before your promotional rate expires. Reps have real authority in that window and almost none after the increase posts. Phone beats online cancellation, because a rep can counteroffer and a cancel button can’t.
Read the TV Stream fine print
TV Stream’s channel lineup includes no local affiliates — no NBC, CBS, ABC, or PBS — and none of the streaming apps, despite the name. You need TV Select Signature or above for either. Check the Spectrum channel lineup tier by tier: TV Stream, TV Select, Select Plus, and Mi Plan Latino.
Choose your install and equipment
Self-install runs $20 versus $70 for a technician. The modem is free; the router is $5/mo., which is cheaper than most providers charge for equipment and avoidable if you own your own.
