Is Frontier good?

Frontier’s internet options vary a lot based on where you live. If you’re in California, Florida, Indiana, or Texas, there’s a chance you have access to Frontier Fiber. It’s super-fast fiber-optic internet service you should grab if you can.

But if you’re anywhere else with Frontier internet service, you’re likely on Frontier’s crumbling DSL network. In that case, Frontier is bad news.

Frontier pros and cons

Pros

  • No data caps
  • Affordably priced fiber-optic internet
  • Up to a three-year price guarantee

Cons

  • No Frontier TV packages
  • Slow DSL internet

Frontier Fiber Internet 500/500 Mbps may be one of the best internet plans in the US, and we recommend grabbing the plan if it’s in your area. We usually suggest at least 100 Mbps download speeds for families, which runs about $50 per month depending on your provider. Frontier Fiber Internet 500/500 Mbps is five times faster than our recommendation for the same price—a sweet deal for sure.

But if you have to have gigabit speeds, Frontier Fiber Gig is a great way to take advantage of Frontier’s fiber-optic network. It’s not the cheapest gig plan on the market, but it’s still worth it for the 940 Mbps you’re getting.

Frontier has two internet networks spread across the US: Frontier Fiber and Frontier Internet. The Frontier Fiber plans are worth considering, especially the value-packed Frontier Fiber Internet 500/500 Mbps package.

But Frontier Internet is DSL, which is much slower than fiber and expensive for what you’re getting; we don’t recommend them. In some areas, speeds can reach up to 115 Mbps, which is fast enough for most households to enjoy streaming TV or game online, but in some areas the internet is as slow as 6 Mbps, which will be nearly unusable if you want to do more than check emails.

But this sort of variation is common for DSL internet providers. If Frontier offers DSL in your area, look for competing cable internet providers instead.

Frontier doesn’t have its own service for new TV customers—if you want TV along with Frontier internet, getting a bundle with DISH is your best bet.

Our top DISH pick is the America’s Top 200 package, which offers more than 240 channels for $89.99 per month. With DISH, you’ll also get a lengthy two-year price guarantee and the Hopper 3 DVR. But you won’t get any deals on Frontier bundles with DISH. Many providers that have both internet and cable TV offer discounts if you bundle, so you might want to check those out first.

We recommend Frontier internet and home phone bundles for certain folks because they are simple and affordable. Just tag on an additional $10 per month, and you get unlimited calling nationwide.

That said, who has a landline these days? TBH, not many of us, but it can be a cheap alternative to cell phone service if staying connected still means hearing a voice rather than staring at a screen.

Final take: Is Frontier worth it?

If you live in an area with Frontier Fiber, it’s an excellent option for internet—and according to our customer survey, it has reliable customer support too. We especially recommend Frontier Fiber Internet 500/500 Mbps plan.

And if—for some heartbreaking reason—your only internet option is Frontier Internet (the DSL service), brace yourself for slow internet speeds and high prices.
