Is Frontier good?

Frontier’s internet options vary a lot based on where you live. If you’re in California, Florida, Indiana, or Texas, there’s a chance you have access to Frontier FiberOptic. It’s super-fast fiber-optic internet service you should grab if you can.

But if you’re anywhere else with Frontier internet service, you’re likely on Frontier’s crumbling DSL network. In that case, Frontier is bad news.

Frontier pros and cons

Pros

  • No data caps
  • Affordably priced fiber-optic internet
  • Up to a three-year price guarantee

Frontier FiberOptic 500 Mbps Internet may be one of the best internet plans in the US, and we recommend grabbing the plan if it’s in your area. We usually suggest at least 100 Mbps download speeds for families, which runs about $50 per month depending on your provider. Frontier FiberOptic 500 Mbps Internet is five times faster than our recommendation for the same price—a sweet deal for sure.

But if you have to have gigabit speeds, Frontier FiberOptic Gig Service is a great way to take advantage of Frontier’s fiber-optic network. It’s not the cheapest gig plan on the market, but it’s still worth it for the 940 Mbps you’re getting.

Frontier has two internet networks spread across the US: Frontier FiberOptic and Frontier Internet. The Frontier FiberOptic plans are worth considering, especially the value-packed Frontier FiberOptic 500 Mbps Internet package.

But Frontier Internet is DSL, so even if it’s widely available, both plans are super slow and expensive for what you’re getting; we don’t recommend them. Frontier Internet plan’s 25 Mbps download speed is the barebones minimum for home internet, and Basic Internet’s 6 Mbps will be nearly unusable if you want to do more than check emails.

By comparison, providers like AT&T have maximum speeds of 100 Mbps on their DSL plans for roughly the same price as Frontier.

Frontier doesn’t have its own service for new TV customers—if you want TV along with Frontier internet, getting a bundle with DISH is your best bet.

Our top DISH pick is the America’s Top 200 package, which offers more than 240 channels for $89.99 per month. With DISH, you’ll also get a lengthy two-year price guarantee and the Hopper 3 DVR. But you won’t get any deals on Frontier bundles with DISH. Many providers that have both internet and cable TV offer discounts if you bundle, so you might want to check those out first.

Is Frontier FiberOptic the best internet?

While we approve of Frontier FiberOptic’s speeds and reasonable prices, it’s not your only fiber internet option. In the areas where you can score Frontier FiberOptic (California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas), there are other fast internet providers too.

  • If you want just internet, AT&T offers affordable, high-speed plans. Plus, you’ll score 12 months of HBO Max for no extra charge.
  • If you want internet and TV, consider Xfinity, which offers killer deals on TV and internet bundles. It’s also the only provider with download speeds up to 2,000 Mbps.
  • And if you love premium channels, you’ve got to check out the great value Spectrum offers on its Silver and Gold TV plans.

Final take: Is Frontier worth it?

If you live in an area with Frontier FiberOptic, it’s an excellent option for internet—and according to our customer survey, it has reliable customer support too. We especially recommend Frontier FiberOptic 500 Mbps Internet plan.

And if—for some heartbreaking reason—your only internet option is Frontier Internet (the DSL service), brace yourself for slow internet speeds and high prices.
