Is Frontier internet good?

Frontier has two internet services that vary wildly in quality. We recommend Frontier Fiber Internet—it’s zippy, reliable, and affordable. But Frontier’s other internet service, which uses a DSL network, doesn’t hold a candle to its fiber-based sibling.

Frontier internet pros and cons

Pros

  • Unlimited data
  • A multi-year price guarantee
  • Fiber plans that give you bang for your buck

Cons

  • Limited fiber internet availability

Frontier internet plans

Frontier puts its best foot forward by offering unlimited data on all of its plans. Many internet providers place unnecessary restrictions on how much you can use the internet, and these data caps can be a real pain in the patootie.

But Frontier’s fatal flaw is its outdated DSL network. Rather than updating those areas from their original DSL technology to superior fiber-optic cables, Frontier went with the “make money now” route of eeking out as much life from the DSL lines as it could.

This short-sighted plan caused problems for a lot of customers and eventually led to Frontier’s bankruptcy in 2020. The internet company lives on, and it has promised its investors it will clean up its act and finally install the fiber-optic cables its customers deserve (and should make more money for Frontier in the long run).

Fiber Frontier offers internet service in 23 states now, but its most prominent in California, Florida, Indiana, and Texas.

Frontier Fiber Internet 500 is our top Frontier pick because it comes with super fast download and upload speeds thanks to Frontier’s fiber internet network. This Frontier Fiber internet deal is among the most affordable of its kind in the US.

If you want to go even faster, the Frontier Fiber Gig and 2 Gig plans have some of the fastest download and upload speeds available to homes today.

But if Frontier offers only DSL internet in your area, you’ll need to call Frontier to find out what speeds are available for your home.

Frontier Fiber vs. the competition

Some of Frontier Fiber’s main competitors are Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T, and Earthlink.

  • Go for Xfinity if you want TV and internet—it’s the best for bundling discounts.
  • Spectrum has similar prices to Frontier (give or take a few dollars), so be sure to check its plans if you’re trying to find a deal.
  • AT&T’s fiber internet plans tend to be more affordable than Frontier’s.
  • Earthlink is known for top-notch customer service, but Frontier customers we surveyed named Frontier a leader in customer support as well.

If you want to include TV service with Frontier internet, your main option will be bundling Frontier with DISH’s satellite TV because Frontier no longer offers its own TV service. But you can see the full list of Frontier and DISH bundles in our DISH bundles review. There’s no discount for bundling these services, so expect to pay the big bucks if you go this route.

Our favorite DISH package is the America’s Top 200 package. For $89.99 monthly, you’ll get an expanded lineup of cable channels like BBC America, the Cooking Channel, and Disney XD. Check out our full DISH review to learn more about the satellite TV provider’s plans.

Frontier also offers home phone plans in some areas, but the price and available services vary from place to place. You’ll have to wait to see your options when you’re signing up for Frontier internet.

Frontier cell phone plans and bundles

Frontier doesn’t offer cell phone service, so it doesn’t offer any deals for bundling cell phone with internet service. Frontier’s lack of cell phone offerings may have played a role in its recent bankruptcy—more successful telecom providers like AT&T and Verizon have that extra revenue to fall back on.

Frontier internet equipment

Most internet service providers allow you to use your own equipment instead of leasing theirs. While Frontier previously had an appalling mandatory $10 equipment fee—whether you used Frontier equipment or your own—it has since removed the upcharge. Now, you’ll get a free router based on your internet plan:

  • Frontier Internet—eero 6 Wi-Fi router
  • Frontier Fiber Internet 500—eero Pro 6 Wi-Fi router
  • Gig Service—eero Pro 6 mesh Wi-Fi system
  • Fiber 2 Gig—Ultrafast Wi-Fi 6E system

Final take: Is Frontier worth it?

Frontier Fiber offers pretty prices on fast download speeds you need for streaming. But look before you leap if you’re in a Frontier DSL internet area—you’ll need to call Frontier to see which speeds are available for your home (click on the button below for the current best number).

With Frontier’s different networks and all their oddities, there are too many variables for us to promise you’ll get a good internet speed or price. Your next steps should be to giving Frontier a call and asking what it can do for you. We hope you luck out and snag the legendary Frontier Fiber Internet 500 plan.
