Is Frontier internet good?

Frontier has three internet services that vary wildly in quality. Frontier FiOS internet is zippy, reliable, and affordable. And while Frontier Vantage mostly keeps pace with Frontier FiOS, it’s missing gigabit speeds. But Frontier High-Speed Internet’s high prices and slow internet speeds leave it miles behind the other services.

Frontier internet pros and cons

Pros

  • All plans have unlimited data
  • All plans have a two-year price guarantee
  • FiOS plans give you bang for your buck

Cons

  • All plans require a two-year contract
  • High-Speed Internet plans are laughably slow
  • High-Speed Internet plans are overpriced

At CableTV.com, we often recommend 100 Mbps as a good internet speed for a household with multiple devices. But Frontier FiOS has even faster internet plans you shouldn’t pass on.

Simply FiOS 500/500 comes with super fast download and upload speeds, and this FiOS internet deal is among the most affordable of its kind in the US.

If you want to go even faster, Simply FiOS Gig Service’s download and upload speeds are some of the fastest available to homes today.

Frontier internet plans and bundles

Frontier puts its best foot forward by offering unlimited data on all of its plans. Many internet providers place unnecessary restrictions on how much you can use the internet, and these data caps can be a real pain in the patootie.

But Frontier’s fatal flaw is its crumbling High-Speed Internet network. Rather than updating those areas from their original DSL technology to superior fiber-optic cables, Frontier went with the “make money now” route of eeking out as much life from the original DSL lines as it could.

This short-sighted plan caused problems for a lot of customers, and eventually led to Frontier’s bankruptcy last year. The internet company lives on, and it has promised its investors it will clean up its act and finally install the fiber-optic cables its customers deserve (and should make more money for Frontier in the long run).

If you live in California, Florida, Indiana, or Texas, you might be able to get Frontier FiOS internet plans. That rocks—Simply FiOS 500/500 is an especially standout deal.

And even Connecticut customers can snag some choice internet packages on Frontier’s Vantage network. However, you may have to pair your internet plan with a telephone plan because Frontier hasn’t advertised standalone Vantage internet packages as far as we’ve seen.

But more importantly, if you live in any other state where Frontier provides internet services, you’re in a tight spot. The most you can hope for is 115 Mbps for around $50. Don’t get us wrong—that’s a lovely speed at an okay price.

Despite the sweet speeds of that 115 Mbps plan, many areas of the Frontier High-Speed Internet network don’t get anywhere near as much bandwidth. We found a space in Georgia where only the basic Frontier Internet package is available, and it reaches only 3 Mbps—but still costs $27.99 per month. That earns a big yikes from us.

Frontier has its own TV service, but it’s not accepting new customers right now. Frontier hasn’t been entirely clear about why, but this hold on TV service may be because of installation worries with the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s no word as to when Frontier will once again accept new cable TV customers, but we’ll update this page once Frontier releases more information.

In the meantime, you can bundle your Frontier service with DISH’s satellite TV. You can see the full list of Frontier and DISH bundles in our DISH review. There’s no discount for bundling these services, so expect to pay the big bucks if you go this route.

If you want phone service, we recommend bundling your Frontier phone with Frontier internet. Even if you barely use the internet, you might save a bunch of money by bundling.

Standalone Frontier phone plans cost anywhere from $32.99 to $66.99 per month—depending on where you live. But once you bundle your phone with an internet plan, the phone portion of your service essentially costs $10 per month.

Frontier cell phone plans and bundles

Frontier doesn’t offer cell phone service, so it doesn’t offer any deals for bundling cell phone with internet service. Frontier’s lack of cell phone offerings may have played a role in its recent bankruptcy—more successful telecom providers like AT&T and Verizon have that extra revenue to fall back on.

Frontier internet equipment

Most internet service providers allow you to use your own equipment instead of leasing theirs. Instead of being chill like everyone else, Frontier charges you $10 per month—whether you use Frontier equipment or your own.

You read that right—even if you have a stunning modem and top-of-the-line Wi-Fi router you purchased separately, Frontier will rip $10 out of your hands for the privilege of having a Frontier modem/router to collect dust. That’s appalling for the tech-lovers and money-savers among us.

Frontier internet deals and promotions

While other internet providers offer promotional pricing for only the first year of service, Frontier locks your starting price for two whole years. That should give you plenty of quality time with your internet service before you worry about price hikes.

Additionally, you can expect a discount on phone and internet when you bundle these two Frontier services. The total amount comes out to be the promotional price of your chosen internet service plus $10—which can be as much as $56.99 off each month, depending on where you live. That’s a tidy sum of savings.

Unfortunately, there’s a downside to Frontier’s money-saving deals—you have to sign a two-year contract with Frontier when you sign up. If you’re planning on moving soon, keep in mind that Frontier’s early termination fee can reach up to $400—fines like that can do real damage if you’re the follow-where-the-wind-takes-you sort.

Final take: Is Frontier worth it?

Frontier FiOS offers pretty prices on fast download speeds you need for streaming in 2020. But look before you leap if you’re in a Frontier High-Speed Internet area—you can’t depend on Frontier actually having high speeds.

With Frontier’s three different networks and all their oddities, there are too many variables for us to promise you’ll get a good internet speed or price. Your next steps should be to giving Frontier a call and asking what it can do for you. You might just luck out and snag some the legendary Simply FiOS 500/500 plan.
