Cable, satellite, and streaming TV in Los Angeles, CA
Hello, current or prospective Los Angeles resident who likes TV as much as we do. Let’s cut to the chase and find you the best TV deal in town.
We’re looking at three main TV providers in Los Angeles: cable TV service Spectrum and satellite TV providers DIRECTV and DISH—plus live TV streaming services like YouTube TV.
Ready? Pretend we’re at a Lakers game and yell, “LET’S GOOOOOOO!” Or chill and keep reading.
Since DIRECTV and DISH are satellite services, you can get them almost anywhere in the city. Same goes for YouTube TV, which you can get anywhere as long as you also have a 25–50 Mbps internet connection. Spectrum, being a cable provider, is more location-dependent.
We recommend DISH as the best overall TV provider for its two-year price guarantee, high channel count, and excellent Hopper 3 DVR. It’s also our pick for the best TV provider for kids because of its many kids channels and superior parental controls. Unfortunately, DISH doesn’t have HBO®.
DIRECTV has tons of sports channels andgives new customers the current seasons of NBA League Pass and NFL SUNDAY TICKET free. You guessed it—DIRECTV is our best-for-sports pick. It also includes the Genie DVR free with all plans. But beware of its two-year contracts and second-year price hikes.
All Spectrum channels are in HD, and its top two packages include free premium channels, which makes it the best channel value. But Spectrum’s DVR storage is low (90 hours) and its price is high ($17.98 a month).
Finally, we named YouTube TV the best live TV streaming service for its reasonable pricing, 85 channels, 3 streams, and unlimited cloud DVR.
Cable TV and internet bundles in Los Angeles
Only two providers offer cable and internet bundles in Los Angeles: DIRECTV (with AT&T internet) and Spectrum. Let’s go over the best cable TV and internet bundle from each provider.
Best TV and internet bundles in Los Angeles
- DIRECTV ULTIMATE All-Included Package + AT&T Internet ($109.99/mo.†)—250+ channels, 100 Mbps DSL internet
- Spectrum Double Play Gold ($139.98/mo. for 12 mos.‡)—200+ channels, up to 400 Mbps (wireless speeds may vary) cable internet, includes HBO MaxTM, NFL Network, SHOWTIME®, STARZ®, STARZENCORE®, and TMC®
† for 12 months plus taxes & internet equip. fee w/ 24-mo. TV agmt & combined bill. Autopay & Paperless bill req’d. Prices higher in 2nd year. $10/mo. internet equip. fee applies
In Los Angeles, you have two excellent options for internet and TV bundles: DIRECTV or Spectrum. That’s because DISH and YouTube TV don’t offer internet service—you’ll have to find another internet provider if you choose either of those TV providers.
Usually we’d recommend DIRECTV’s CHOICETM All-Included + AT&T Internet ($104.99 a month), but we noticed that ULTIMATE is only $5 more per month—for an extra 65 channels. That’s a good value, especially with all the freebies (see deals section above).
But AT&T Internet is DSL. Spectrum’s Double Play Gold bundle ($139.98 a month for 12 months) offers cable Internet that’s four times faster—and its included premium channels are a permanent part of your package, not a limited-time promotion. That’s totally worth the extra 30 bucks.
