What’s premiering this week
Series premiere, Sunday, September 10 (September 7 on AMC+): The Maggie- and Negan-led Dead City showed a promising way forward for the Walking Dead universe. Can Daryl carry the load on his wing-vested shoulders? The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon relocates our scruffy hero to France, where the zombies only work 35 hours a week and enjoy a better quality of death. Daryl Dixon will be followed by the season 6 premiere of Ride With Norman Reedus, which finds him biking in Utah with Keanu Reeves.
Inside the NFL | The CW | Sports, talk
Season 47 premiere, Tuesday, September 5: It’s officially football season, and The CW has landed its biggest sports-get yet: Inside the NFL, the long-running commentary and analysis series previously carried by HBO, SHOWTIME, and Paramount+. The weekly hour-long show, which will now be available on broadcast TV for the first time in its history, is hosted by ex-Pittsburgh Steeler Ryan Clark, with Channing Crowder, Jay Cutler, Chad Johnson, and Chris Long on the panel. This was the Riverdale channel?
What to watch on Netflix this week
Predators | Netflix | Documentary, nature
Series premiere, Wednesday, September 6: Tom Hardy (Peaky Blinders) narrates British import Predators, a nature docuseries that profiles the top five apex animals as identified in the episode titles: “Cheetah,” “Polar Bear,” “Lion,” “Puma,” and “Wild Dog.” (Sorry, no “Venom” or “Bane.”) The painstakingly filmed series is as beautiful to look at as it is brutal to behold. But if you don’t want to see non-predators taken down violently in the wild, look away. All five episodes drop on September 6.
Virgin River | Netflix | Drama
Season 5 premiere, Thursday, September 7: Netflix’s annoying new habit of splitting seasons up over months continues with the fifth season of comfort-food hit Virgin River: 10 episodes will be available to stream on September 7, with the final two arriving on November 30(?!). Anyway, Dr. Mel (Alexandra Breckinridge) is still pregnant and engaged to barkeep Jack (Martin Henderson), and there’s a new crime boss in the sleepy town of Virgin River (Barbara Pollard, Supernatural). November, Netflix? Seriously?
What to watch on Prime Video this week
Sitting In Bars With Cake | Prime Video | Comedy, drama
Movie premiere, Friday, September 8: It’s all right there in the title: 20-something BFFs Corinne (Odessa A’zion) and Jane (Yara Shahidi) spend a year bringing introvert baker Jane’s cakes to Los Angeles bars in order for her to meet new people. But, during their “cakebarring” adventure, Corinne receives a life-changing medical diagnosis that will bring on all the feels. Sitting In Bars With Cake is based on Audrey Shulman’s book of the same name and promises 50—that’s right, 50!—unique cakes in under two hours.
How to Date Billy Walsh | Prime Video | Drama, rom-com
Movie premiere, Friday, September 8: British teens Amelia (Charithra Chandran) and Archie (Sebastian Croft) have been friends since childhood, and Archie has finally summoned the courage to declare his love for her. Enter American transfer student Billy Walsh (Tanner Buchanan), who Amelia instantly crushes on, foiling Archie’s plans. Can he keep Amelia and Billy apart without ruining his lifelong friendship? A more pressing question: Is this Billy Walsh related to the Billy Walsh of Entourage?
What to watch on Apple TV+ this week
The Changeling | Apple TV+ | Drama, horror
Series premiere, Friday, September 8: New horror miniseries The Changeling is receiving advance praise for being one of Apple TV+’s most daring originals yet—given the streamer’s critical track record, that’s saying something. The self-described “adult fairytale” stars LaKeith Stanfield as a New York book dealer whose increasingly erratic girlfriend (Clark Backo) mysteriously disappears into the city’s otherworldly underworld of non-human entities. Three of eight episodes stream on September 8.
The Beanie Bubble | Apple TV+ | Comedy, drama
Movie, now streaming: Lost in the 2023 rush of business biopics (Tetris, Air, BlackBerry, et al) was the July release of The Beanie Bubble, about the 1990s Beanie Babies collectibles craze. Directors Kristen Gore (daughter of Al) and Damian Kulash Jr. (singer and guitarist of OK Go) put stars Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, Geraldine Viswanathan, and an unrecognizable Zach Galifianakis through a colorful wringer of comic capitalism. It’s not all technically true to the historical facts, but it is an entertaining ride.
W2W wildcards of the week
Office Race | Comedy Central | Comedy
Movie premiere, Monday, September 4: As it did with last year’s Out of Office, Comedy Central is premiering workplace comedy Office Race on Labor Day. Is the first Monday of September the new hot release date? Sure, why not? An out-of-shape office shlub (Beck Bennett) is dragged into running a marathon to compete against his athletic a-hole of a boss (Joel McHale), which does not go well. Office Race also stars Kelsey Grammer, Erinn Hayes, J.B. Smoove, Sasheer Zamata, and Alyson Hannigan.
Secrets of Penthouse | A&E | Documentary
Series premiere, Monday, September 4: It took A&E two seasons and 20 episodes to cover the Secrets of Playboy, whereas the new Secrets of Penthouse docuseries is only four episodes long, which must mean founder Bob Guccione was running a cleaner adult mag operation, right? Not exactly. The Guccione family’s personal and professional dramas were straight out of Succession, with the mercurial Bob dying broke and empire-less in 2010. Secrets of Penthouse will air on Monday and Tuesday on A&E.
