Top Gun (1986)
Of course, nothing’s more similar to Top Gun: Maverick than its 1986 predecessor. Set to an iconic 80s soundtrack, Top Gun is a rite-of-passage story chocked full of high-flying action. It launched Tom Cruise to blockbuster stardom and inspired a generation of aviators.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout (2018)
You may want to watch the first five Mission: Impossible films before Fallout. But Top Gun fans will love this particular installment for its stunning third-act helicopter sequence.
While Fallout and Maverick come from different directors, you can feel the ariel action in Fallout helped shape what’s seen in Maverick.

Star Wars (1977)
Top Gun: Maverick features a mission with many parallels to the ariel Death Star attack from the original Star Wars film. The similarities aren’t so shocking if you consider the types of war films that influenced George Lucas. But maybe we’re overthinking things, and Maverick is simply one with the Force.

Hot Shots! (1991)
From one-third of the directing team behind Airplane! and Top Secret!, Hot Shots! is a Top Gun parody that knows the assignment. It stars a pre–Tiger Blood Charlie Sheen as U.S. Navy pilot Sean “Topper” Harley, who’s summoned back to active duty for a secret mission. Comedic hijinks ensue, spoofing other films like Rocky and Superman.
