On this week’s episode of Only Murders in the Building, Oliver, Charles, and Mabel are haunted by literal and metaphorical ghosts as they try to exorcise the Goosebury Theater. But after Oliver erases the message on Ben’s dressing room mirror, tensions come to a head, and it sets the gang off in separate directions.

Who killed Ben Glenroy on Only Murders in the Building?
#1: Loretta
This week’s episode largely put the case on the back burner, so Loretta stays on top of our power rankings for another week. The episode all but underlines that Loretta wrote the pig message on Ben’s mirror, as the “F” and “P” on Loretta’s note match the writing on the mirror—it’d take a lot of backtracking to introduce a new culprit at this stage in the season.
Oliver choosing Loretta over the gang is a hell of a pivot, but we understand his heel turn at this point. Oliver’s wildly in love with Loretta and his meeting with Jerry—Donna’s former director who lives in the theater’s rafters and grills questionably sourced meat—underlines his fears about what’ll happen if Death Rattle Dazzle! A Death Rattle Musical! fails. As Jerry tells Oliver, indecision might be death, but that’s no guarantee you’ll make the right decision.
#2: Dr. C
Jonathan’s in the clear, but his and Ben’s physician is still on the board. We still haven’t learned how Ben got poisoned during the murderer’s initial attempt, but considering the number of items on Jonathan’s prescription, Dr. C’s looseness with the details could tie both plot points together.
#3: K.T.
K.T. finally makes it up from the reserves for this week’s power rankings. We doubt she’s directly involved with Ben’s murder—she roots for Howard during his monologue and generally helps the gang out. But we’re pinning two K.T.-related moments from this episode on the board:
- During opening night, Howard mentioned that her office was locked, and he heard noises from behind the door.
- We get a close-up of K.T.’s highlighted sheet going into the paper shredder—K.T. uses green and magenta highlighters.
#4: Kimber
Kimber (Ashley Park) and the rest of the Death Rattle Dazzle cast don’t show up in this week’s episode, so they keep their place on this week’s rankings by default. We’re still putting a pin into Kimber’s possible bad blood with Loretta, along with (as we laid out last week) the rest of the cast possibly being involved in a Murder on the Orient Express scenario.

Playbill notes
- Sweet Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) pulls double duty this episode, as he gets the weekly voiceover slot and the third act’s big monologue. The people demand more Howard!
- Ghost lights are a real theater superstition, as they’re believed to settle the ghosts living in old theaters. For practical reasons, they’re also used to illuminate the stage when the theater’s dark. They also keep cast or crew members from walking into props or off the stage’s edge.
- Poor Jerry (Peter Bartlett) has been living in the Gooseberry Theater for a while, and considering the amount of charcoal grilling (!) he’s been doing in that enclosed storage room, he can’t be doing well.
- This week’s opening credits easter egg: a sandbag that falls between Oliver and Charles.
