Rian Johnson’s Knives Out was one of the best movies of 2019, the peak of the pre-pandemic theater experience. Now, in the era of streaming movie releases, Knives Out’s sequel (the recently named Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) will look a little different.
Glass Onion‘s single week in theaters is now over, and it’s coming to Netflix on December 23.

A special preview in theaters
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiered in AMC, Regal, and Cinemark theaters starting November 23. Sorry folks—unlike its predecessor, Glass Onion was only in theaters for a week. Now you’ll have to wait until it comes to Netflix.
Don’t get too discouraged. Glass Onion is coming to Netflix on December 23, only a month after its theatrical release. Think of its time in theaters as more of a sneak preview. Good luck dodging spoilers for a month, though.
In the meantime, a new Benoit Blanc skin is coming to to popular game Among Us on December 13, so that’s something.
Where to stream Glass Onion
After December 23, you’ll be able to stream Glass Onion with any Netflix plan. This November actually marked two “firsts” for the streaming powerhouse: one, it’s allowing an original film to air for a full week in theaters rather than stream exclusively on the platform.
And two, it debuted a new subscription tier. Users can pay $6.99 per month—shaving at least three dollars off their monthly bill—to watch Netflix with ads. Since ads require an internet connection, you also wouldn’t be able to download anything for offline viewing. We personally wouldn’t want to sit through a lengthy Tide Pod ad before finding out who the killer is, but that’s just us.

Glass Onion plot and characters
Like Knives Out before it, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery follows Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he solves a convoluted murder mystery. Think of it like Agatha Christie’s Poirot for the modern day.
Glass Onion takes place on a Greek island owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). The “glass onion” in the title refers to a mysterious puzzle box that Miles sends to a group of his high-society friends. It’s also a reference to the Beatles song “Glass Onion,” but we’ll just have to wait and see how else it connects to the plot.
What we do know is that Glass Onion features a star-studded cast, including Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monáe, Ethan Hawke, Dave Bautista, and Leslie Odom Jr., as well as the late Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim.
You probably don’t have to watch Knives Out to understand Glass Onion. That’s why it’s called A Knives Out Mystery and not Knives Out 2. Detective stories are often self-contained mysteries, with the lead detective as the only recurring character.
We do recommend you watch Knives Out at some point, just because it’s a very good film. Unfortunately, the original Knives Out is not currently on Netflix. We expect the streaming service will want to buy the rights eventually, but for now, you can only catch it on video-on-demand (VOD) services like Amazon Prime Video and Google Play.
