✦ At CableTV.com, we’ve been helping folks find the best home TV and internet services in their area since 2007. Get an in-depth look at how we evaluate TV services on our Why You Can Trust CableTV.com page.

What TV service is best?

The CableTV.com crew and I have done our research and testing and narrowed down your options to only the Best of the Best TV service providers.

Verizon Fios TV wins our top Best of the Best award for the best overall TV provider. It has stacked channel counts, transparent pricing, high reliability, and tons of promos to sweeten the pot.

Plus, Verizon scored top marks across our entire 2025 TV Customer Satisfaction Survey. It may not have the widest availability and its plans can be quite pricey, but it is the absolute cream of the TV crop. Basically—if Verizon Fios TV is available near you, get it.

We think Philo is the best value TV service out there. You’ll get 70+ channels for just —a phenomenal value for less than thirty bucks a month.

Customers love it, too, with Philo landing the winning spot in this year’s Live TV Customer Satisfaction Survey.

We’ve put DIRECTV STREAM down as our Best of the Best pick for the top TV provider for sports, thanks to a comprehensive sports experience with 30+ sports channels, wide regional sports network (RSN) availability, and a user-friendly interface.

We’ll also tell you why Xfinity is the reigning best traditional cable provider, YouTube TV shines for live TV streaming, and the Disney bundle stands strong for on-demand streaming.

Read on to learn more about why these providers (and more!) earned our awards.

Best of the Best winners for TV services up close

Now it’s time to go in-depth on the winners of our 2025 Best of the Best Awards. Keep reading to find out who won what award, and why we chose the winners we did.

Best of the Best: Verizon Fios TV

Price: $95.00–$139.00/mo. | Live channels: 60–425+ | DVR storage: 50–200 hrs.

Pros: Reasonable pricing; large channel counts; great signup deals
Cons: Limited availability; limited plan choices

We’ve given Verizon Fios our trophy for the best TV provider out there in 2025. It’s hard to imagine a more comprehensive TV service, offering customers the highest channel counts of any provider at reasonable prices. Plus, Verizon Fios offers great signup deals with no pesky contracts or sneaky promo pricing.

But don’t just listen to us; listen to literally everyone in our 2025 TV Customer Satisfaction Survey. Verizon was consistently the highest-ranked provider in all but one category—that’s 19 first-place finishes out of 20. And in the highest overall satisfaction, Verizon scored ten whole points higher than the next individual provider. If that’s not total domination, I don’t know what is.

This trend continued across other national surveys. Verizon Fios TV was JD Power’s 2024 winner for satisfaction in the East Region, and had the highest satisfaction score overall for all traditional TV providers surveyed. In a similar survey done by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), Verizon Fios was also the highest-scoring overall subscription TV service, placing 5 points higher than the baseline for TV satisfaction.

“There has never been a problem with our cable service. Its trustworthy guides and menu are readily accessible and informative. Voice control, close caption are easily [m]anaged.”

Annette C., Pennsylvania

We also picked Verizon Fios TV as the Best of the Best for Channels. Channel selection-wise, Verizon can’t be beat. It has the highest channel count of any provider, offering a whopping 60–425+ channels across its three plans. But if there’s one thing I know from all my TV researchin’ and testin’, it’s that channel count ≠ channel quality, that’s for sure. Providers love stuffing their lineups with filler channels like music channels just to puff up the overall count.

Verizon’s guilty of that stuffing, but they also have the quality to back it up, offering all 35 of the most-watched channels in the U.S., according to Variety. Verizon also boasts a super low cost-per-channel—its The Most Fios TV plan ($139.00/mo., 425+ channels) costs just $0.33 a channel. That’s the lowest of all the traditional TV providers.

Here’s the long and short of it: If Verizon Fios was available near me, I’d get it in a heartbeat.

Best Bang for Your Buck: Philo

Price: $28.00/mo. | Live channels: 70+ | DVR storage: Unlimited

Pros: Affordable; 7-day free trial
Cons: No local or sports channels; small add-on selection

Philo’s value is the one to beat, offering up  channels for the low price of just $28.00/mo.. To top it off, Philo also includes the on-demand streaming service AMC+ (regularly $6.99–$9.99/mo.) at no additional cost.

Even with Philo’s June 2024 price increase up from $25.00/mo., its customers still are overwhelmingly satisfied with its prices, coming in second place in our bang for your buck question—a mere 1 point behind Frndly TV, which costs $20 less than Philo (but offers a much worse channel selection).

For the budget-conscious out there who still want their TV fill, Philo’s got you covered. Philo will provide channels like AMC, Discovery, Food Network, Hallmark Channel, HISTORY, Lifetime, Paramount, and more. Philo, as you can see from flicking through our Philo channel guide, leans heavily towards entertainment and lifestyle channels.

Beware, then, of Philo’s serious lack of local and sports channels—a plight shared by similarly affordable TV streamers like Spectrum TV Stream and Xfinity NOW TV. The local channels issue can be fixed with no problem with a one-time purchase of a cheap over-the-air antenna (OTA).

My parents hated the fact that their TV provider of choice, YouTube TV, doesn’t offer MeTV—a channel they watch often—so I sent them over to our OTA guide, and they found a great antenna that’ll provide ‘em with local channels forever, no subscription needed. We suggest Philo fans do the same.

“It's great for me and my family to stream on multiple devices. It's very easy to use. And I'm satisfied that all my shows stream on this subscription.”

DIRECTV STREAM logo

Best of the Best for Sports: DIRECTV STREAM

Price: $74.99–$154.99/mo. | Live channels: 90–185+ | DVR storage: Unlimited (for 9 mos.)

Pros: Large channel counts; user-friendly interface; wide RSN availability
Cons: Expensive plans; requires internet connection

DIRECTV STREAM doesn’t require a contract, although you can lock in your price ($74.99–$154.99/mo.) for two years with a 24-month agreement that comes with a DIRECTV streaming device. Unfortunately, that pricing remains pretty darn high. DIRECTV STREAM still has a solid channel count (90–185+), though, including over 30 (!) sports channels. “The nice thing about DIRECTV STREAM’s base prices is that they already include the Advanced Receiver Service Fee and Regional Sports Fee,” says CableTV.com Sports Editor Taylor Kujawa. “But you still pay a premium for that extensive sports lineup, so it’s really best for diehard fans who want the most comprehensive TV plan.”

We also appreciate DIRECTV STREAM’s user-friendly interface, making it super easy to adapt to for even die-hard traditional TV users. DIRECTV STREAM’s use of channel numbers is a huge plus in our book, helping keep things similar to traditional TV while still delivering a sleek live TV streaming experience. Customers agree: in our Live TV Streaming Customer Satisfaction Survey, 85% of DIRECTV STREAM subscribers said they were completely or very satisfied with the provider’s user experience.

If you have the money, DIRECTV STREAM is a reliable service that’ll provide sports lovers with nearly everything they could want from a TV provider. Our package of choice is CHOICE All Included ($79.99/mo., 125+ channels) with its RSN access and loads of essential sports channels for NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL games.

YouTube TV logo

Best of the Best for Live TV Streaming: YouTube TV

Price: $82.99/mo. | Live channels: 100+ | DVR storage: Unlimited (for 9 mos.)

Pros: User-friendly interface; unlimited DVR; multiview capabilities
Cons: Higher price tag; no A&E or Lifetime

For the fourth year running, YouTube TV is our choice for the best live TV streaming service. It has 100+ channels, unlimited DVR (with a nine-month storage limit), three simultaneous streams, six user profiles, and numerous channel-pack and premium add-ons. And YouTube TV is now the official home of NFL SUNDAY TICKET (formerly a DIRECTV add-on), with loads of live, out-of-market games for football fans.

Customers love YouTube TV as much as we do, with the service taking a top three spot for overall satisfaction in our Live TV Streaming Customer Satisfaction Survey, with 79% of respondents completely or very satisfied with their service.

YouTube TV’s homepage displays your recently played channels, along with recommendations for other shows you may enjoy. (Image credit: CableTV.com)

You might have noticed that YouTube TV has a high cost per channel ($0.83), but this isn’t a bad thing since live TV streaming services typically have leaner lineups stocked with popular channels. But while YouTube TV’s channel lineup has a higher concentration of popular channels, it is missing some networks, like A&E, Lifetime, and VICE. If those are must-have channels, check out our full guide to the Best Live TV Streaming Services to find a service with them.

If you’re not sure whether you’d prefer streaming TV over traditional TV, you may be able to snag a free trial of YouTube TV. We’ve seen free trials for as long as 21 days before, but YouTube TV’s not always offering one up. We suggest you check out our YouTube TV deals page to see what promos they’re slingin’ at the moment.

Hulu and Disney+ Bundle logos

Best of the Best for On-Demand Streaming: Disney bundle (Duo Premium)

Price: $10.99–$29.99/mo. | Simultaneous streams: 4 | Free trial: None

Pros: Disney+ and Hulu included; satisfying original programming; no ads
Cons: Expensive; frequent price hikes

Okay, I may not have been the one to choose CableTV.com’s best on-demand streaming pick—that honor goes to our streaming aficionado Olivia Bono—but I concur with her findings. I love the Disney bundle, with Hulu being my most-watched streaming service by miles. Disney+ itself is worth having, too, especially if you’re a lover of the ever-expanding Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar universes. Even with its recent (and frequent) price hikes, Disney+ scored solid marks in our 2025 On-Demand Streaming Customer Satisfaction Awards, with 77% of subscribers totally satisfied with the service.

Screenshot of Disney+ website homepage showing results for Hulu shows.
With the Disney+ bundle, you can view Hulu content through the Disney+ app (Image credit: CableTV.com)

Duo Premium serves up both of these services—Hulu and Disney+—with no ads in sight for $19.99/mo.. Yes, that is relatively expensive, but with ad-free Hulu costing $18.99/mo. alone, it’s a bangin’ deal if you’re already going to be subscribing to both services.

The convenience of bundling multiple services in one package (with just one bill) is a huge plus in our book. Customers appreciate these bundle options, too, with Brendan W. from Florida remarking that “Hulu on demand has a far bigger catalog than I realized. Bundling it with Disney plus allowed very easy access.”

If you don’t want to fork over the hefty twenty bucks a month that Duo Premium will run you, Duo Basic is a great budget pick that also provides you with access to both Disney+ and Hulu—if you don’t mind the ads.

Best of the Best for Cable: Xfinity

Price: $20.00–$80.00/mo. | Live channels: 10–185+ | DVR storage: 20–300 hrs.

Pros: Wide availability; bundle discounts; inexpensive plans for first 12 mos.
Cons: Hidden fees; price hike after a year; contracts in some regions

Xfinity made what felt like a total 180 in this year’s CableTV.com customer satisfaction survey, moving up the ranks and tying for second place among individual providers. Its satisfaction score this year was even higher than live TV streamers like Fubo. Xfinity also came in second nationally in JD Power’s survey. So, is cable back in the game? Well, that depends …

Cable TV is still in the game certainly, at least for now. We know that its popularity continues to decline with the ever-growing ubiquity—some may say oversaturation—of streaming services. However, plenty of people are still attached to the old cable dog. And we think, in 2025, Xfinity is the best of the best.

With low starting prices (Xfinity’s cheapest cable plan goes for as low as $50.00/mo. for 125+ channels in its West region) and wide availability, Xfinity can be a solid cable choice. Beware of its hidden fees and price hikes, though—those sneaky add-ons are part of what hindered Xfinity from being our best value TV provider. In our ideal TV world, providers would banish all second-year price hikes and broadcast TV fees from the kingdom (Verizon Fios has done this—we love you, Verizon). But alas.

I know that even as a cable TV user, people want the convenience of streaming their fave shows on the go. That’s why I love that the Xfinity Stream mobile app lets you stream your live TV channels, on-demand movies and shows, DVR recordings, and more. It’s one of the best mobile streaming experiences we’ve found from a traditional TV provider.

Hear from real Xfinity customers

“Xfinity has good service for my area with excellent coverage [and a] top quality router system. Customer service is excellent and the app is very easy to use and has step by step guide.”

Linda S., Pennsylvania

Best for Best for Kids: DISH

Price: $86.99–$116.99/mo. | Live channels: | DVR storage: 500 hrs.

Pros: 2-yr. price guarantee; wide availability; top-notch parental controls
Cons: DVR rental fee; satellite dish requirement; contracts

DISH may not be our top TV provider this year as in years past, but it still is the best satellite provider, inching out its competitor (and almost-partner, due to a failed merger in the second half of 2024) DIRECTV. Satellite TV, although notoriously less reliable than cable or fiber TV, is boosted by its biggest plus: availability. You got a view of the southern sky? Boom, you can get DISH TV. That just isn’t possible with many other traditional TV providers, including (and especially) the Best of the Best, Verizon Fios TV, with its small nine-state availability.

We recommend most everybody DISH’s America’s Top 200 plan ($106.99/mo., 240+ channels) because it has the most channels for the best price—$0.47 per channel is hard to beat. Add on top-notch parental controls thanks to DISH’s partnership with Common Sense Media, and you have a dual award winner.

We’d also name the DISH Hopper 3 ($10/mo.) as the best of the best DVR if we handed out that award. But really, it still is the cream of the crop. The Hopper 3 stores 500 HD hours, allows you to record up to 16 programs at once, supports 4K resolution, and includes the DISH Voice Remote. Although the Hopper 3 rocks our socks off (we’ve tested it for over three years), we hate that it comes at a monthly cost—one that can add up on top of DISH’s pricier plans.

DISH’s prices and reliability definitely bogged down its overall Customer Satisfaction Survey scores, but with a widely available service like satellite TV, we aren’t super surprised—satellite’s reliability is super susceptible to weather, with fiber or cable TV providing much more consistent performance for traditional TV customers. But, you can’t get fiber or cable in nearly as many areas in the U.S. as you can with satellite TV, so it’s a trade-off many folks have to make.

Hear from real DISH customers

“DISH was easy to install and a company my family has trusted for years! We've never once had a bad experience with their service or what they provide.”

Madlyn K., Texas

For four years running, DISH has also been named our best TV provider for kids. Families will love that DISH has the channels kids want from Disney, Nickelodeon, and local PBS affiliates. And parents will appreciate DISH’s excellent parental controls, created in partnership with Common Sense Media, which enable them to fine-tune the content their kids consume.

Best of the Best for Promos: DIRECTV

Price: $74.99–$164.99/mo. | Live channels: 165–340+ | DVR storage: 200–450 hrs.

Pros: 2-yr. price guarantee; wide selection of sports channels and add-ons; great intro deals
Cons: 2-yr. contract; expensive; limited bundling options

DIRECTV was only narrowly held off the top spot for best satellite provider by DISH. If you’re a sports fan, DIRECTV will probably knock DISH off its pedestal, with its wide array of sports channels and available add-ons (although we still prefer DIRECTV’s live TV streaming offering, DIRECTV STREAM).

If you have the money, DIRECTV is a reliable service with high customer satisfaction ratings—and the PREMIER All Included package ($164.99/mo., 340+ channels) has every single channel DIRECTV offers, including Max, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, Cinemax, STARZ, and MGM+. That’s the package we’d get if we could afford it.

Even if you’re not going for the top package, I think DIRECTV consistently has the best deals of any TV provider (and I personally update all of our deals pages every month!). Promos vary month-to-month, but DIRECTV’s got some consistent ones that keep the pot super sweet for new customers, including three free months of Max, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, STARZ, Cinemax, and MGM+. They’re also letting customers bow out of having local channels to save around $12 a month. (Still want local channels? Pay $20–$40 one time and have them forever with an OTA antenna.)

Want the low-down on every deal DIRECTV’s currently serving up? Check out our handy guide to DIRECTV-specific deals.

Honorable mentions: Other top TV service providers

Hulu + Live TV

Price: $81.99–$95.99/mo. | Live channels: | DVR storage: Unlimited (for 9 mos.)

Pros: Unlimited cloud DVR; Disney+ and ESPN+ bundle included
Cons: Missing some popular channels; pricy

Hulu + Live TV has always been on the pricier side for live TV streaming services (although YouTube TV’s recent price hike has now made the two the same price), but it packs in tons of popular channels and offers plenty of deals and discounts.

Hulu + Live TV also includes the Hulu bundle that includes Disney+ and ESPN+ (a version of this bundle minus ESPN+ is our top pick for the best on-demand streamer). The massive on-demand libraries between these three top-notch streaming platforms will provide you with endless hours of entertainment if there’s nothin’ good on live TV.

Aside from the cost, Hulu + Live TV’s drawbacks are the absence of a few fan-favorite channels (like AMC, BBC America, and IFC) and its limit of only two simultaneous streams.

Cox

Price: $61.00–$152.00/mo. | Live channels: | DVR storage: 250–500 hrs.

Pros: Cheaper add-on packages; bundles with high-speed internet
Cons: High base plan prices; pricy DVR fees

Cox has four TV-only plans, plus bundles with high-speed internet—and everything is pretty expensive, even the DVR service.

Cox’s top-tier TV plan, Contour TV Ultimate ($152.00/mo.), is its best value with 250+ channels—including CINEMAX, Max, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, and STARZ—plus your first TV box free and the Record 1 Starter DVR service (250 hours of storage, one simultaneous recording) free for 12 months.

To compare, DISH’s America’s Top 200 plan has 240+ channels, 500 hours of DVR storage, and 16 simultaneous recordings for only $106.99/mo.—and DISH guarantees the price for two years. Cox prices are good only for 12 months with a one-year term agreement. With DISH, you’ll get more bang for your buck—and save some bucks.

Spectrum

Price: $45.00–$105.00/mo. | Live channels: 150–160+ | DVR storage: 50–100 shows at once (saves for 90–365 days)

Pros: All channels in free HD; contract buyout
Cons: Confusing DVR options; frequent price hikes

Spectrum used to have one of the cheapest TV packages in the U.S. … that is, until they majorly jacked up the price of their base plan, TV Select Signature, from $65.00/mo. to $95.00/mo. (reg. $115/mo.) in the second half of 2024.

With this price hike, we no longer recommend Spectrum as wholeheartedly as we did before—it bumped them off our pedestal for best cable provider, a spot now held by Xfinity. But Spectrum does still offer a solid 150+ channels with TV Select Signature, including all 35 of the most-watched channels, according to Variety.

If you’re looking to leave your current provider, Spectrum does have a great deal for you: a contract buyout of up to $500. You also won’t have to sign a contract with Spectrum, so you can peace out whenever you’re unhappy.

What to look for in a TV provider

What? Really? You wanna do your own legwork after all the sweat we put into this? Just kiddin’—we respect you for doing additional research.

Here’s a tip sheet for TV-plan shopping to help you.

Channels: quantity vs. quality

Channel counts are only numbers—don’t rely solely on them. Review each provider’s channel lineups to ensure you get what you want. Here are some channel lineup lists from our top providers to get you started.

Contracts vs. no-contract plans

Nobody likes to be stuck with a provider and a payment that they don’t like. Be sure you understand the terms of your contract, from how long your contract lasts to how much you have to pay if you leave before it ends. Or, you can look for providers that don’t require contracts, like Verizon Fios, or live TV streamers like YouTube TV.

Some providers, like Xfinity, offer no-contract plans at a higher monthly fee. We recommend these only if you’ll be moving soon—or you’re living away from home for an extended period.

Some providers will also pay out your contracts to get your business. Optimum, Spectrum, and Verizon Fios all pay up to $500 to free you from your current contract. How nice is that?

Hidden fees

When you’ve spent all this time picking a plan with a good price and cost per channel, any extra fee feels like a surprise. Your provider should disclose these when you subscribe, but these fine-print details are easy to miss. So be on the lookout.

We go super in-depth on hidden fees for a wide range of providers. Check the list below to find your provider of choice. (Spoiler: you won’t find Verizon Fios TV or any live TV streamers like Philo or YouTube TV on there because they’re hidden fee-free!)
