What to Watch Before Secret Invasion
Marvel’s newest show brings the MCU’s Phase 5 to Disney+. Here’s what you need to know beforehand.
After years spent helping other superheroes, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) finally gets center stage in Secret Invasion, Disney+’s latest Marvel TV show. Secret Invasion is about an insurgent group of Skrulls who plan to take over the world using their shapeshifting alien abilities.
As with Disney+’s past Marvel shows, you can jump in without knowing everything about past Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entries, but it helps if you aren’t starting from scratch. Let’s recap the biggest things you’ll need to know before watching Secret Invasion.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Nick Fury got caught in the Blip at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, and like anyone who got turned to dust and brought back to life via time travel, he’s working through some issues. In Fury’s case, he grew a beard, stopped answering his friends’ texts, and moved (to a giant space station).

Captain Marvel (2019)
The alien Skrulls, a race of shapeshifting reptilian creatures, made their MCU debut in 2019’s Captain Marvel. At the end of the film, Nick Fury and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) set off to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld, but considering the 30-year in-story gap between Captain Marvel and Secret Invasion, that search hasn’t been going well.
Captain Marvel also features the first appearance of G’iah, the daughter of Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Emilia Clarke plays her in Secret Invasion as an adult, and G’iah shows up in Captain Marvel as a child.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Samuel L. Jackson’s in the MCU’s second Spider-Man film, but as the post-credits stinger revealed, it technically wasn’t Nick Fury.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Fury and other Skrulls left Earth to build out S.A.B.E.R., a new intergalactic defense organization complete with a giant space station. Fury likely would’ve been content to stay in space, but the events of Secret Invasion draw him back to Earth.

In the show’s finale, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) meets a Skrull who relays a message from Nick Fury—he needs her for a mission up in space with S.A.B.E.R.
The mission likely has more to do with the upcoming film The Marvels, which takes place after Secret Invasion, but we’ll pin it on our “Tracking Potential MCU Plot Points” corkboard just in case.
