Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth returns to our screens this July for the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, and the first to be officially sucked into the seemingly all-consuming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Deadpool & Wolverine marks the first R-rated entry in the MCU, a fact poked fun of in the Super Bowl–aired trailer in classic meta-Deadpool fashion.
Joining Reynolds’ Wade Wilson/Deadpool is Hugh Jackman’s James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine, his first appearance as the character since 2017’s eponymous film Logan (no relation to this author, BTW).
Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine first appeared together on-screen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While we don’t know all the antics these two will get up to in DP3, if the trailer is anything to go by, we’ll get all the crude humor and violence Deadpool is known for, all folded up nicely into the Disney-owned MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine release date
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters in the U.S. on July 26, 2024. It is the third film in the Deadpool franchise and marks the entrance of Reynolds’ character into the MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine trailer
The first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer brings back plenty of old faces beyond Wilson and Logan, including Wade Wilson’s fianceé Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).
The trailer begins with enforcers from Loki’s Time Variance Authority (TVA) kidnapping a toupeed Wilson from his birthday party. The TVA seems to need Deadpool to help them fight a new enemy, tantalizing him with the promise of joining the pantheon of MCU heroes. Wilson seems to catch on to the meta-ness; “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever,” he says to Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen. “I am the messiah. I am … Marvel Jesus.” We sure hope so.
