How To Watch HBCU GO

✦ Edited and fact-checked by Taylor Kujawa, our Sports Editor with over eight years of experience in sports media and digital publishing.

For the uninitiated, HBCU GO centers on HBCU sports and culture, with live games, replays, and other on-demand programming. The easiest way to watch is through HBCUGO.tv, where you can access the platform’s live stream without a cable subscription or TV provider login.
Beyond the website, you can tune in to HBCU GO through its mobile app, a free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channel, and participating local broadcast stations. Current streaming partners include Amazon Prime Video, The Roku Channel, and Local Now, but availability can vary by event and market.

HBCU GO isn’t an all-access hub for every game involving a historically Black college or university. Conference networks, ESPN outlets, and other rights holders also carry many HBCU events. In this guide, we break down where to watch HBCU GO, what sports and shows it carries, and where to look when a game isn’t on the service.

Where can I watch HBCU GO?

The simplest way to watch HBCU GO is through its free stream on HBCUGO.tv. Part of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, the service also reaches viewers through its mobile app, streaming partners, and local broadcast stations in participating markets.

HBCU GO doesn’t have one nationwide local channel number. Broadcast affiliates vary by market, so viewers without a participating station can use HBCUGO.tv or one of the listed streaming partners instead.

What can you watch on HBCU GO?

HBCU GO’s sports lineup is broad but selective. Football and men’s and women’s basketball make up much of its live sports coverage, with select games involving teams from the SWAC, CIAA, and SIAC. It also carries select softball, flag football, track and field, and other championship events.

The exact lineup changes throughout the year, so one HBCU GO appearance doesn’t mean a team’s entire season will be available there. The platform’s sports library also includes game replays and other on-demand coverage.

For a specific matchup, check HBCU GO alongside the school’s or conference’s official schedule. Our college football viewing guide and college basketball viewing guide can also help with games assigned to other national and streaming outlets.

HBCU GO programming beyond live sports

Sports are only part of HBCU GO’s lineup. The service also features original series, interviews, documentaries, films, and programming centered on HBCU history, campus life, and culture.

Current programming includes sports-focused shows such as “Callin’ Plays” alongside series like “Legends & Legacy” and “Crowned.” Individual titles can rotate, so browse HBCU GO’s current live and on-demand library for the latest episodes and programs.

What isn’t included with HBCU GO?

HBCU GO isn’t an all-access pass to every HBCU sporting event. Media rights are divided among HBCU GO, conference-run platforms, national broadcasters, and other outlets, so you’ll want to check the assignment for the specific game you’re trying to watch.

Conference-run networks

SWAC TV carries SWAC events that aren’t assigned to HBCU GO, while conferences such as the CIAA and MEAC operate their own streaming networks for other games. An HBCU GO partnership with a conference doesn’t mean every conference matchup appears on the service.

For example, a SWAC game labeled HBCU GO should be available through HBCU GO’s distribution outlets. A matchup assigned to SWAC TV belongs on that platform instead, even though both can offer free viewing.

National and road-game rights

ESPN and other national broadcasters also carry selected HBCU games under separate media agreements. Nonconference road games can follow the rights of the host school, conference, or event organizer, which may send the matchup to a completely different network or streaming service.

The safest approach is to use the network or streaming service shown on the official game schedule rather than assuming every appearance by an HBCU team will be available on HBCU GO.

HBCU GO apps and supported devices

Because HBCU GO uses several distribution paths, there isn’t one universal device list for every viewing option. You can watch HBCUGO.tv through a compatible web browser, while the HBCU GO app supports iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Apple TV.

For connected TVs and streaming devices, HBCU GO is currently available through Prime Video, The Roku Channel, and Local Now. Those partner platforms determine their own device compatibility.

HBCU GO also kicks it old-school with traditional TV. Selected programming airs on TheGrio Television Network and participating local broadcast stations, depending on the event and market. An antenna may get you a local affiliate for free, while a TV provider can also carry participating stations.
