Since 2014, STARZ drama Outlander has produced 67 episodes over five seasons; season 6 (which premiered Sunday, March 6) will add eight more. In other words, Outlander newbs will have plenty of history to catch up on and Scottish accents to decipher (try the closed captioning, it helps).

Seasons 1–4 (2014–2019)

The first four seasons of Outlander are available to stream on Netflix and STARZ on-demand. Previous seasons are also available to rent or buy through Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, or YouTube for $1.99 an episode. Seasons 5–6 (2020–2022)

Season 5 of Outlander, which aired in early 2020, is currently only available through STARZ on-demand and won’t arrive on Netflix until May 2022 at the earliest. STARZ is also the only place you’ll be able to watch season 6, which premiered Sunday, March 6, with new episodes being released weekly through April.

STARZ is available as an add-on channel through most cable, satellite, and live TV streaming providers for $8.99 a month (after a seven-day free trial period). It can also be added as a channel through Amazon Prime Video or subscribed to as a standalone streaming app for the same price.

What is Outlander?

Outlander, based on the Diana Gabaldon novel series of the same name, is a historical fantasy drama with sci-fi and time-travel story elements. The TV series was developed by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) for STARZ, where it premiered in 2014.

In Outlander, 1940s ex-military nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) is transported back in time to the 1700s after touching the standing stones of Craigh na Dun in Scotland. There, she falls in love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), whose clan is being pursued by the British army led by Captain “Black Jack” Randall, an ancestor of Claire’s 1940s husband.

Over five seasons, Outlander has been lauded as a smart and sexy (emphasis on sexy—the show more than earns its TV-MA rating) drama and has been nominated for over 75 critical and industry awards. Outlander is also one of STARZ’s most popular series, averaging 1 million viewers per season.

Ahead of the March 2022 premiere of season 6, STARZ renewed Outlander for a seventh season in 2023. This will make Outlander STARZ’s longest-running original series—sorry, Power.

Final take

Outlander is a sprawling historical drama that laces up fantasy, romance, and sci-fi into a single, gorgeously filmed package. If you’re new to the series, we’d recommend starting at the beginning; Outlander’s dense backstories and plot twists can’t be jumped into midstream.

If you’re already a fan of shows like Bridgerton, The Crown, or A Discovery of Witches, Outlander might be for you. The series also dips into the graphic intensity of period dramas like Game of Thrones and Vikings, as well as the tear-jerking tendencies of Virgin River.

Outlander is also an especially adult show steeped in sex, violence, and traumatic situations—maybe keep the kiddies away.
