Wolverine: Listen up, bub: We were gonna publish this today. Then everything chang—
Deadpool: Why so serious, Uncanny DeVito? Our movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, is expected to bring in big bucks from the box office and provide our fans a (much-needed) fun distraction from the chaos of real life.
So what if the presidential election is no longer raisin-on-raisin? ’Cause 58% of Americans already wanted me for prez over those shriveled fruits. (I like my chances against the new gal, too.) So, let’s keep talking about why I’m Oval Office material and you’re not. Take it away, copywriter!
With these two chimichanga-sized personalities coming together and clashing for the new flick, we combined survey and search trend data to find out which hero Americans love the most.
We’ll address superhero fatigue, who you’d rather hang with, and how a fictional superhero election would map out.
Do you align with America’s favorite abrasive hero?
Deadpool & Wolverine: survey says Americans are gearing up to go
Despite any dismay from the cinephiles, superheroes remain popular with movie-going audiences. While movie theaters struggle to compete with streaming, among other problems, a big-budget blockbuster like Deadpool & Wolverine can still bring people in (thus, keeping the Summer of Cinema alive).
But what about all the hubbub surrounding “superhero fatigue?”
According to our survey, American audiences are ready for more superhero movies and the foul-mouthed fun of Deadpool & Wolverine:
- 56% of Americans are planning on seeing Deadpool & Wolverine at the theater
- 72% of Americans said they’re fans of superhero movies
- 69% have never experienced superhero fatigue
If you were burned out on superheroes but are ready to jump back in, missed a Marvel movie or two along the way, or just want to refresh your memory and catch up on the MCU, we’ve created a list of how to watch the Marvel Comic Universe to help you catch all the references, easter eggs, and plot points.
Deadpool vs. Wolverine: fans want fun over fury
For fun, we asked our survey respondents who they’d rather hang out with, date, and be president between Deadpool and Wolverine. In our survey, respondents said that the merc with a mouth may be better suited to spend personal time with, but the clawed crusader comes across as more competent.
According to our survey respondents, Deadpool wins democratically:
- 61% would rather hang out with Deadpool than Wolverine
- 56% would rather date Deadpool than Wolverine
- 58% would vote for Deadpool to be president over current candidates
There may be some debate about why Wolverine is worse company than Deadpool, but (unsurprisingly) both fictional fan favorites are preferred to our current presidential prospects.
However, a little over half (52%) of our respondents think Wolverine would be a better president than Deadpool, and 58% believe Wolverine would beat Deadpool in a fight. Let’s hope we can resolve our differences without busting out our adamantium claws.
Besides, it’s safe to assume there’s a fair share of fan overlap between the two heroes: 69% of our survey respondents are fans of Marvel movies, and 66% are fans of X-Men.
Luckily, there are plenty of Marvel shows to check out on Disney+ during July:
- X-Men ’97
- Ms. Marvel
- Moon Knight
- Hawkeye
- What If…?
- Loki
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
- WandaVision
Deadpool dominates searches in 38 states
And what if we held a fictional “presidential” election between Deadpool and Wolverine based on popularity?
When comparing trend search data over the past year, Deadpool beats out Wolverine in 38 states. The gabbing gunslinger is beloved all across the U.S. but was particularly popular in wild Western states like Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Idaho, and Nevada.
Meanwhile, Wolverine’s popularity peaks in Alaska, where the Canadian clawster might feel right at home. And, perhaps in the lone-wolf spirit, Hawaii is also hip to the hairy hero.
The states that are most split between the two comic-movie kings were California, Illinois, Vermont, and New York. (We won’t go into what the Electoral College would look like.)
Fortunately, both of these brash bravados are coming together in Deadpool & Wolverine for what’s sure to be an action-packed and hilarious adventure—so we didn’t have to pick a favorite, after all. Sigh … if only life imitated art.
Methodology
We surveyed 600 people using Pollfish on July 2, 2024—before Joe Biden dropped out of the race. The data was post-stratified to accurately reflect the U.S. population. In this case, post-stratification was applied to gender and age groups.
To create the Deadpool vs. Wolverine map, we used 12 months of Google Trends search data to determine which superhero each state searched for more.
