“Minx,” a 1970s-set comedy/drama, raised eyebrows with its graphic peek into the adult magazine business when it premiered in 2022. The series follows a young feminist (Olivia Lovibond, “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as she reluctantly teams up with skeevy publisher Doug (Jake Johnson, “New Girl”) to launch her own (tasteful) nudie mag for women, “Minx.” The Paul Feig-produced “Minx” is a breezy ride of comedic highs, dramatic lows, and possibly the most full-frontal male nudity to ever grace American TV screens.
Most viewers only recently discovered “Minx” on Netflix, but the series began as an HBO Max original in 2022. Then, while filming the show’s second season was already underway, HBO Max canceled “Minx,” leading STARZ to pick up both seasons with the option to produce a third. Wasting no time, “Minx” got right down to business in the show’s first episode with male model auditions for the magazine’s pictorial spread. Lovibond later told “The Hollywood Reporter” that no prosthetics were used for the scene—the “shvantzes” were very much real.

“Au Revoir, le Double Dong” (Season 1, Episode 2)

Joyce (Lovibond) is a hard “no” on allowing sex toy ads in her magazine, until her sister Shelly (Lennon Parham) talks her into trying one before she passes judgment. After some hesitation, Joyce brings a product home, sets the mood with soft music and candles, and puts the warranty to the test. With a little help from the latest “Minx” photo shoot, Joyce becomes a believer in master marketing.

“An Exciting New Chapter in the Annals of Erotica” (Season 1, Episode 4)

Joyce’s feminist ideals clash with her attraction to a “Minx” model: the hunky-but-dumb Shane (Taylor Zakhar Perez). She’s technically his boss; having sex with him would put the magazine (and her reputation) at risk. She goes through with it anyway, which leads to a conversation about how it can never happen again—and then it happens again. Now, Shane is in love, but Joyce wants out.

“A Scintillating Conversation About Lethal Pesticide” (Season 1, Episode 9)

Looking for a way to put some spark back into her dull marriage, Shelly agrees to do a sexy photoshoot with Bambi (Jessica Lowe) behind the camera. It soon becomes apparent that Shelly’s lacy black lingerie does the trick, but not in any way she expected: Shelly goes in for a kiss, and Bambi reciprocates for Shelly’s first non-heterosexual romantic experience. It’s a mild scene by “Minx” standards, but still steamy.

“You Happened to Me” (Season 1, Episode 10)

In a scene that qualifies as literally spicy, radio shock jock Willy (Eric Edelstein) barks orders at his wife Wanda (Allison Tolman), treats her like a servant, and demands sex whenever he feels like it. Wanda takes a cue from “Minx”‘s feminist message and makes a plate of nachos for Willy with an extra topping of super-hot peppers, which she shoves down the front of Willy’s underwear to teach him a lesson.

“The Perils of Being a Wealthy Widow” (Season 2, Episode 1)

Shelly has returned to the suburbs, trying to put “Minx” and her makeout session with Bambi behind her, settling for a slightly improved sex life with her husband Lenny (Rich Sommer). But when Bambi drops by for a visit, their passion reignites, and soon the women are having sex in Shelly’s kitchen pantry. Blissfully unaware, Rich also joins Shelly for a romp in the pantry after Bambi has left the scene.

“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Sexiness” (Season 2, Episode 4)

Doug finally unveils the secret project he’s been working on: Club Minx, a Chippendale’s ripoff that’s actually a few years ahead of Chippendale’s real-life debut in 1979. Besides mucho erotic bumping and grinding from barely-clothed male dancers, the stage show also features a ripped Adonis emerging from a fabricated birth canal. But Joyce dashes Doug’s club dreams by telling him no and to shut it down.

After spending a trip to her alma mater, Vassar, to be honored for her success, wrapped up in herself and ignoring Shelly, Joyce is shocked to find her sister and the woman professor she once worshipped having spirited sex in their hotel room. Confused and flying home alone to Los Angeles alone, Joyce has an impulsive hook-up with a stranger in the plane’s bathroom.

“Woman of the Hour” (Season 2, Episode 8)

In the season and series finale of “Minx,” Joyce decides to fight the soulless, mainstream direction the magazine has taken under new ownership by covertly sneaking an erotic bathhouse photoshoot and a story Shelly wrote about her sexual awakening that had been previously canceled into print. It’s less a spicy note than a defiant one, closing out a series that’s had far more sexy moments than could fit here.
