CMT launched in 1983 as CMTV, a cable channel dedicated to country music videos. A trademark infringement lawsuit from the already-established MTV forced a name change to CMT. But, in a twist worthy of a cheatin’ ballad, CMT was eventually acquired by MTV Entertainment Group in the 2000s.
