Cable network Comedy Central launched on April 1, 1991—April Fool’s Day, appropriately. Its early-days programming included the first incarnations of “The Daily Show” and “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher,” as well as cult favorites “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and the animated “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.”
It wasn’t until the late ’90s that Comedy Central broke into the mainstream with the introductions of new “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart and the foul-mouthed, animated “South Park.” Those two shows remain Comedy Central’s flagship originals today, along with around-the-clock comedic movies and TV reruns, plus stand-up comedy specials.
Comedy Central’s current lineup of original shows is smaller than it used to be—it’s essentially just “The Daily Show” and “South Park”—but the Paramount-owned channel is still a reliable go-to for laughs at any time of the day. It’s also available on most cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services.
What channel is Comedy Central on near me?
Back in the beginning, Comedy Central wasn’t an easy channel to find; word-of-mouth movements and letter-writing campaigns had to bombard regional cable companies to get the network added. It’s a different story today, as Comedy Central is as readily available as Paramount cousins like MTV and VH1. Below are 50+ cities and the TV provider channels where you can find Comedy Central.
