The best spooky movies on Disney+
Halloweentown
It’s been over 25 years since the first Halloweentown movie, but it’s still one of the best spooky franchises of all time. Disney+ has the whole collection: Halloweentown, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown.
If you didn’t grow up in the 2000s, Halloweentown is about a girl named Marnie who discovers that she comes from a family of powerful witches from a magical alternate dimension. She spends the movies trying to connect the two sides of her heritage: human and magical being.
If you like talking skeletons, High School Musical cameos, and men who are secretly 400 frogs in a trenchcoat, this series is for you.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Everyone knows The Nightmare Before Christmas. You can’t swing a witch’s broom in a Hot Topic without hitting a few Jack Skellington ceramic mugs and Oogie Boogie sweatshirts.
But for the uninitiated, this animated classic follows Jack, a skeleton and Pumpkin King of Halloweentown (no relation to the 1998 film) who yearns for a life outside of witches and severed heads.
He finds this new life in Christmastown, which is exactly what it says on the tin: a place where it’s Christmas all the time. But much like the clearance section of a Michaels craft store, things get weird when the holidays start to mix.
Werewolf by Night (color optional)
Marvel surprised us all in 2022 with Werewolf by Night, a monochromatic, campy horror flick unlike anything we’ve seen from the MCU before. We look forward to rewatching the special this year. We probably won’t be watching Werewolf by Night in Color, which is exactly what it says on the tin. It feels kind of wrong to take away the film’s stylistic lack of color, but to each their own.
Werewolf by Night is a lesser-known Marvel character—a werewolf named Jack Russell. His Halloween special follows him into a deadly game played by monster hunters, with a mysterious relic as the prize. It also sees appearances by Elsa Bloodstone and Swamp Thing, two other cult-favorite characters from the comics.
Twitches
Alex Fielding (Tia Mowry) and Cam Barnes (Tamera Mowry) come from two different worlds but run into each other by chance on their 21st birthday. They soon learn that they are not only long-lost sisters but also twins, and on top of that? They’re witches.
Twin witches. Twitches. Get it? You get it.
Frankenweenie
Animated in Tim Burton’s signature stop-motion style, Frankenweenie is an homage to the 1931 film adaptation of Frankenstein. Rather than a mad scientist challenging the laws of nature just because he can, this Victor Frankenstein is a lonely little boy trying to resurrect his dead dog.
This movie is a balm for anyone who hates movies where the dog dies. I mean, the dog still dies, but he gets better.

Disney+’s Hallowstream
Themed marathons aren’t just for cable channels anymore. But unlike Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween and Disney Channel’s Calling All the Monsters, you don’t have to scour the TV guide to catch your favorite Halloween films on streaming.
Disney+ is currently running a “live playlist” (FAST channel) for Premium subscribers called Hallowstream. It’s a 24/7 livestream of popular Disney Halloween movies like Halloweentown.
Hulu’s Huluween
Hulu, also owned by Disney, has a similar themed event called Huluween. Instead of a livestream, Huluween just refers to the lineup of spooky premiers available to Hulu and Disney Bundle subscribers.
