Yellowstone spinoffs don’t entirely dominate Paramount+’s growing slate of original TV shows and movies—there’s some other good stuff in there too. From legacy reboots like Criminal Minds: Evolutions and Mike Judge’s Beavis & Butt-Head to new excursions into the Star Trek universe, Paramount+ has an original series or film for just about every taste—including over a dozen South Park movies scheduled to premiere through 2027(!).
Sylvester Stallone starring in a co-production between Terrance Winter (Boardwalk Empire) and Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown) sounds like a match made in cinematic crime heaven, and Tulsa King delivers. Fresh off a 25-year prison stint, New York mob capo Dwight Manfredi (Stallone) is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to make his own not-so-legal business ventures happen. TL;DR: Tulsa King is a gritty drama with comedic winks and surprise plot twists.
Another Taylor Sheridan creation, 1923 is a sequel to Yellowstone prequel 1883, making it a . . . seprequel? Whatever it is, 1923 brought film icons Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren to streaming TV as Jacob and Cara Dutton, settlers in drought-ridden Wyoming battling the elements, the economy, and everything else the early ’20s have to throw at them. As grim and dusty as the drama is, 1923 became the most-watched debut in Paramount+ history in December 2022.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, switches it up as a Los Angeles arson investigator looking into the connection between recent forest wildfires and good-looking local teens suddenly being turned into good-looking werewolves. Like the 2004 Edo van Bekom YA novel it’s based on, Wolf Pack is a throwback to ’00s fare like Twilight and MTV’s Teen Wolf, but with a darker edge and more foreboding frights—and, of course, SMG.
Evil began as a broadcast show in 2019 on CBS, but moved to Paramount+ for its second, third, and upcoming fourth season, proving that Satan doesn’t belong on rabbit-ears TV. The series follows a forensic psychologist (Katja Herbers), a priest (Mike Colter), and a skeptical tech expert (Asif Mandvi) as they investigate cases involving the seemingly demonic—it’s an X-tra creepy and terrifying X-Files. Evil also has enough funny moments to nearly qualify as a dark comedy.
Crime drama Criminal Minds ran for 15 seasons on CBS from 2005 to 2020, and continues to be one of the most-watched series on any streaming service. It was only a matter of time before Paramount+ got the band back together for Criminal Minds: Evolution, a new-ish series that’s less of a cash-grab reboot than a credible continuation. This time around, the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit profilers are tracking a network of serial killers across 10 taut episodes.
