In Ohio State’s case, coach Ryan Day followed Urban Meyer’s championship-winning tenure with a sterling 45–6 overall record, and he’s lost only two conference games since taking over in 2019. But what is Ohio State’s reward for taking eventual national champion Georgia down to the wire, despite dropping two games against a resurgent Michigan team? Preseason predictions that no longer have them as the Big Ten’s top dog and analysts wondering if Ohio State’s lost their fastball.

On paper, the Buckeyes are much closer to the team that was just a point away from a potential national championship run last year. Ohio State’s receiver room continues to churn out NFL first-round talent, and Buckeyes starting quarterback Kyle McCord will likely blaze through the bulk of their conference schedule.

But as always, Ohio State’s season comes down to the game at the end of the year. Here’s what you need to know if you want to watch Ohio State football this season.

Preview: Ohio State vs. Notre Dame

After a slate of nonconference warmups, Ohio State faces its biggest test so far this season in Notre Dame. Here are the three biggest questions for Ohio State in tonight’s game:

1. By the stats

2. Is Kyle McCord the guy?

Kyle McCord has steadily improved since taking over at quarterback, as last week’s Western Kentucky game saw him put up a season-best 318 passing yards alongside three touchdowns. But Notre Dame will be the first opponent with an offense that can keep up with the Buckeyes: Sam Hartman has been a revelation for Notre Dame, and he’s led the Irish to strong wins over NC State and Central Michigan.

But as ESPN’s Bill Connelly noted on X, McCord’s passing has largely been limited to short and quick passes. That said, the Buckeyes didn’t need to go past second gear in their nonconference games, and McCord’s receivers are more than equipped to handle the deep game. Still, Notre Dame will likely force the Buckeyes to utilize the whole field.

3. Ohio State receivers vs. Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s secondary will be a stout test for receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, as the Irish rank third in fewest passing yards allowed per game. They also have excellent cornerbacks in Benjamin Morrison and Cam Hart, and Notre Dame will get back defenders JD Bertrand and DJ Brown from injury.
