How To Watch Weightlifting at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Ten gold medals, 120 qualified weightlifters, six total lifting attempts, and one mission for their countries.

The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France, and will host professional weightlifters at the South Paris Arena 6.

The weightlifters will compete from August 7 to August 11, which means we have five straight days of snatches and clean and jerks.

You can watch all 2024 Olympic weightlifting events live on Peacock with reruns on USA and CNBC. Or stream all of them on Peacock whenever you’d like.

Chantel Buchi has seven years of experience covering sports in marketing and for Fansided, NFL Network, and the AAF. She dabbles in weightlifting and is excited to watch young lifters Olivia Reeves and Hampton Morris compete.

A total of 60 men and 60 women will qualify to step onto the Olympic weightlifting stage. Each country can enter three male and three female weightlifters to fight for one of 10 gold medals. There will be 10 weight classes, five for each gender.

Team USA’s five athletes competing in France are Jourdan Delacruz, Hampton Morris, Olivia Reeves, Wes Kitts, and Mary Thiesen-Lappen.

Two Americans compete on the opening day of weightlifting

Team USA will be represented by the small and fierce Jourdan Delacruz. She competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but fell short when she couldn’t complete an attempt at the clean and jerk. This year is her year.

For the men’s category, we’re in for a treat. You might have heard of Hampton Morris, the phenom who’s broken multiple junior and senior records in the last two years. The most impressive and recent is a world record—he successfully completed a 176 kg/388 lb. clean and jerk with a body weight of less than 135 pounds.

If that doesn’t blow your mind…

So check out the schedule below to watch their six attempts live. Don’t worry, fellow Americans. I listed the weight classes in pounds, as well.

Team USA isn’t lifting today, but one of the current greats is

On Thursday, we don’t have a Team USA athlete competing, but China’s Shi Zhiyong will be fun to watch. Zhiyong is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, one in 2016 as a 69 kg competitor and the other in 2020 in the 73 kg category. And he’s still in top shape to fight for the podium in 2024.

Olivia Reeves competes today—enough said

Friday is the day when we all get to feel weak. We get to watch a 21-year-old woman who can outlift most strong men (her squatting videos are a must-see). Our very own Olivia Reeves will be competing today, and I’d be surprised if she didn’t win gold.

At the 2024 IWF World Cup at the beginning of April, this then 20-year-old snatched 118 kg/260 lb. and clean and jerked 150 kg/330 lb., winning first place in both lifts and receiving gold with having the best-combined score.

Now that she’s 21, she enters the senior competition and is ready to set new records for the 71 kg group.

She’s going to be an unbeatable force, this one.

Wes Kitts gets a second chance

Saturday would have been the day Mattie Rogers competed for Team USA, and her large fanbase is crestfallen that she won’t be stepping onto the stage. Unfortunately, Mattie sustained an injury that caused stabbing pain in her leg during qualifiers.

But we do get to watch another Team USA member compete this day.

Wes Kitts competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and finished in 8th place, although he set a new heavyweight snatch record at 177 kg/390 lb.

He now has a few more years of experience, strength building, and technique refining, which makes anyone believe he’s destined for greatness in the 2024 Olympics.

Mary Thiesen-Lappen is our final athlete to step onto the stage

The third woman the USA will be sending to the 2024 Olympics is Mary Thiesen-Lappen.

Once a star track and field thrower, she most recently won the gold medal at the IWF Grand Prix II in December 2023. She didn’t miss any of her lifts and finished with a 120 kg/265 lb. snatch and 157 kg/346 lb. clean and jerk.

I’m rooting for her to hit even bigger lifts today.
