New on TV this week
This week’s What To Watch picks include Prime Video’s adult animation series #1 Happy Family USA, Nathan Fielder’s HBO Original comedy series The Rehearsal, the Apple TV+ comedy Government Cheese, the fifth season of Law & Order: Organized Crime (now on Peacock), and more. Let’s hit the couch!
New on HBO and Max this week
The Dark Money Game | HBO, Max | Documentary series
Limited series premiere, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15–16, 9:00 p.m. ET: In this two-part documentary series, prolific Academy and Emmy Award–winning documentarian Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) examines dark money donations in the American political system. (And not a moment too soon, amirite?) The first part airs live on HBO tonight, with the second part following tomorrow night. Or you can stream both parts on Max as of today.
New on Apple TV+ this week
Government Cheese | Apple TV+ | Comedy
Series premiere, Wednesday, April 16: Set in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles circa 1969, Government Cheese follows smash-and-grab specialist Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo). Fresh out of prison and excited to rejoin his family and society, Hampton has big plans, big debt, and a wife and two sons who aren’t the family unit they used to be. Now, everybody’s in for a wild ride. Four of 10 episodes stream today, with the rest coming weekly.
New on Prime Video this week
#1 Happy Family USA | Prime Video | Adult animation, comedy
Series premiere, Thursday, April 17: From comedian Ramy Youssef (Ramy, Poor Things, co-creator of Mo) and Pam Brady (South Park) comes this adult animated series about a patriotic Muslim family trying to live peacefully in America not long after 9/11. Nope, this isn’t a thriller. It’s an absurdist satire where the Hussein family’s mere existence freaks out their neighbors: ‘Murricans of a certain persuasion. Youssef voices family patriarch Hussein Hussein, leading a cast that includes Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Mandy Moore, and, uh … more. You can stream all eight episodes on Prime Video starting April 17.
New on Peacock this week
Law & Order: Organized Crime | Peacock | Drama
Season 5 premiere, Thursday, April 17: For its fifth season, Law & Order: Disorganized Crime (a spinoff of Law & Order: SVU, from Dick Wolf’s ever-expanding Law & Order universe), moves from NBC to Peacock. Story-wise, expect to see Det. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) contend with smugglers, cyber-terrorists, and the Mob family he’s pissed off in previous seasons. Two episodes stream today, while the premiere episode airs live on NBC at 10:00 p.m. ET—perhaps to entice people to sign up for Peacock. Subsequent episodes will hit the streaming service weekly.

New on Shudder this week
Dead Mail | Shudder | Horror
Movie, Friday, April 18: In what looks like a cross between VHS-era horror and a shot-on-video (SOV) masterpiece from the 1980s and ‘90s (and set in the former decade), a kidnapping victim crawls his way to a mailbox, depositing a bloodstained SOS note before his captor can catch up to him. The messy missive finds its way to the US Postal Service’s ace dead letter guy, who tries to track down its source and free its author.

The Rehearsal | HBO, Max | Comedy
Season 2 premiere, Sunday, April 20, 10:30 p.m. ET: Three years after its last episode aired, Nathan Fielder’s critically acclaimed mocku-series returns to HBO for a second season. Expect more of the deliriously cringey same, with Fielder putting his team and resources to work for regular folks with big problems involving romance, politics, and animal experimentation (on Fielder, tho). The premiere episode follows The Righteous Gemstones tonight, then five more episodes air weekly until Sunday, May 25.
New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week
Eephus (2025)
This baseball comedy (named for a deviously slow, arcing pitch) is about two recreational teams squaring off for the last time before their field is demolished to make way for a school. The trailer hits some familiar baseball-movie notes, like The Sandlot’s wistful nostalgia and Major League’s ensemble goofiness (albeit low-key). It also reminds me of the softball memoir Wrecking Crew by John Albert (it’s out of print but available on Kindle—and a must-read).* You can rent Eephus from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) as of Tuesday, April 15.
