What To Watch This Weekend: Stream Our Top 7 TV and Movie Picks (August 18–24)

Entertainment writer Randy Harward recommends the best shows, movies, and more on TV this week, including Devo, Invasion, Long Story Short, and Peacemaker.

A collage of images from Devo, Invasion, Long Story Short, and Peacemaker, movies and shows covered in CableTV.com’s What to Watch This Week column for August 18–24.
Clockwise from left: Devo (Screenshot from YouTube), Invasion (Apple TV+), Long Story Short (Netflix), and Peacemaker (Jessica Miglio).

New on TV this weekend

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include the Devo documentary on Netflix, the third season of Invasion on Apple TV+, a new show from the creators of BoJack Horseman (Long Story Short on Netflix), and the return of Peacemaker to HBO Max after three-and-a-half years.

We’re also making a rare reality TV recommendation—with qualms—of Hulu’s virginity exploitation joint Are You My First?, plus plugging Season 3 of the Australian comedy Fisk (Netflix), and the weirdo Japanese drama The Box Man, which comes to video-on-demand (VOD) this week. Let’s hit the couch!

New on FX and Hulu this week

Are You My First? | Hulu | Reality

Series premiere, Monday, August 18: From the producers of Love Island USA comes this trash reality series hosted by Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn Bristowe. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to find love, or being a virgin. Going on a reality TV show to find a soulmate or—as with Are You My First?—smash for the first time? Yeah, that’s gross. It strains credulity that these 24 “sexy young singles” (yup, not a nerd among them) saved themselves until their mid-20s/early 30s. It’s even more unbelievable when these men and women are goin’ on TV hoping so hard to find that elusive very special someone to help ‘em rip up their V-cards. Also, I’m fairly certain cash and prizes are involved. Sure, it’s entertaining, but it’s mostly gross.

New on Netflix this week

Devo | Netflix | Music, documentary

Movie, Tuesday, August 19: The runtime for this documentary about the legendary, highly influential new wave band from Akron, Ohio could’ve been a lot longer than 90 minutes. That director Chris Smith (who helmed the amazing 1999 documentary American Movie) manages to cover more than a half-century of “Devolution” in the average length of an ‘80s slasher movie makes me wonder if he skipped some stuff or simply made the most efficiency, satisfying, all-killer/no-filler Devo doc possible. I guess I’ll find out today.

New on Netflix this week

Fisk | Netflix | Comedy

Movie, Wednesday, August 20: When I started this week’s column, this Australian comedy about a freshly divorced, recently fired, socially awkward attorney (creator/writer Kitty Flanagan) trying to start over wasn’t on my radar. I started watching it and finished both seasons in about 36 hours. If you’ve been looking for a new favorite show, this might be it. The theme music, charmingly strange characters, and genuinely funny writing hooked me fast. Fisk’s third season streams in its entirety on Netflix starting today.

New on HBO Max this week

Peacemaker | HBO, HBO Max | Drama, comedy, science fiction

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, August 21: A three-and-a-half year wait for Peacemaker’s second season is utter cruelty. They can’t just drop a hilarious, violent show (with a hot hair metal soundtrack curated by series creator/director James Gunn!) on us and disappear for that long. Well, of course they can, and they did. But at least the show’s back. This season, Peacemaker discovers an alternate universe—his own personal utopia—but it forces him to contend with his traumatic past and consider his future.

New on Netflix this week

Long Story Short | Netflix | Adult animation, comedy

Movie, Wednesday, August 20: Listen up, BoJack Horseman fans—the show’s creator, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, has a new show! This one follows the Schwooper family in and out of different time periods (from childhood to adulthood), “chronicling their triumphs, disappointments, joys, and compromises.” Expect hilarity and emotional depth similar to what we enjoyed in BoJack Horseman. The cast includes Lisa Edelstein, Paul Reiser, Abbi Jacobson, Nicole Byer, Ben Feldman, Max Greenfield, and Angelique Cabral.

New on Apple TV+ this week

Invasion | Apple TV+ | Drama, science fiction

Season 3 premiere, Friday, August 22: This Apple TV+ sci-fi series about (wait for it) an alien invasion—where the action happens in real time on three continents and in three languages through multiple perspectives—returns for a third season. New series regular Erika Alexander (Bosch, Living Single) joins the cast. Created and produced by Academy and (multiple) Emmy Award nominee Simon Kinberg and David Weil (Prime Video’s Hunters). All 10 episodes are available to stream today.

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

The Box Man (2024) | Drama

A man spends his days hidden in a cardboard box, where he watches the world while taking detailed notes. A photographer called “Myself” discovers the man and decides to emulate the guy’s lifestyle and become a Box Man. Unfortunately, the path to his goal has obstacles: three odd characters—four, if you count the original Box Man. Based on Kōbō Abe’s 1973 novel. You can rent The Box Man from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, August 19.
