The Hunting Wives | Netflix | Drama, thriller

Series premiere, Monday, July 21: Originally meant to air on STARZ before the split with Lionsgate, this murder mystery/thriller series based on May Cobb’s book follows Sophie O’Neill (Brittany Snow), who leaves a stressful but enviable career in Chicago for the boring housewife life in Texas. There, Sophie meets the Hunting Wives, a clique of fast-living ladies who draw the new girl into a dizzying world—and a murder investigation. Malin Akerman, Dermot Mulroney, and Chrissy Metz also star. Starting today, all eight episodes stream on Netflix.

Acapulco | Apple TV+ | Comedy

Season 4 premiere, Wednesday, July 23: The Apple TV+ comedy series set in Malibu, California, and the resort town of Acapulco, Mexico (and multiple periods) returns for its fourth and final season. In the present day, rags-to-riches resort owner Máximo Gallardo Ramos (Eugenio Derbez, who also starred in the film How to Be a Latin Lover, this series’ inspiration) works to put his Las Colinas Resort back on top. In 1986, young Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) contends with a tough competitor. Two episodes stream today, and the remaining eight come weekly thereafter.

New on Comedy Central this week

South Park and Digman! | Comedy Central | Adult animation, comedy

Season 27 premiere, Wednesday, July 23, 10:00 p.m. ET: Do you like potty-mouthed, raunchy cartoons as much as I do? If so, you’re in for a treat tonight, after a two-week delay due to legal disagreements over where South Park’s 27th season would air. The adult animation institution returns tonight on Comedy Central, followed by the Andy Samberg vehicle Digman!—about a rockstar archaeologist—in its season-two premiere. Note: If you need to catch up on (or rewatch) South Park, HBO Max has all 26 seasons available to stream. To get up to speed on Digman!, check out the first season on Paramount+ or Comedy Central Video On Demand.

Pro tip: We covered the return of The Sandman a few weeks back, but here’s a reminder that the next six episodes hit Netflix on Wednesday, July 23.

New on Hulu this week

Washington Black | Hulu | Drama

Limited series, Wednesday, July 23: In this series based on the 2018 novel by Esi Edugyan, George Washington “Wash” Black (Ernest Kingsley, Jr.) is a precocious, talented 11-year-old born onto a sugar plantation in 1800s Barbados. When forced to flee the only home he’s ever known as a runaway slave, Wash winds up on an epic around-the-world adventure, facing danger and falling in love. Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, American Fiction) also stars and executive produces. As of today, all eight episodes are available to stream on Hulu.

Happy Gilmore 2 | Netflix | Comedy

Movie, Friday, July 25: I fell out of my seat laughing the first time I saw Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore. Granted, the film about an angry, vulgar hockey player who discovers a latent talent for golf isn’t arthouse cinema, but not every film has to be. And, sometimes, an unapologetically lowbrow comedy with genuine heart is as sublime a cinematic experience as any Oscar bait. But does Happy Gilmore need a second part? It’s risky; sucky sequels dilute the beloved original’s magic and disappoint its cult following. But, judging from the crowd-pleasing trailer, Adam Sandler and director Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, Murder Mystery) remember what made Happy Gilmore special and have done their best to recapture lightning in a bottle. So I’m cautiously optimistic about Happy Gilmore 2.

Pro tip: Looking for more early Adam Sandler comedies? Currently, Netflix has the OG Happy Gilmore, Prime Video has Billy Madison, and you can find The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy at video-on-demand (VOD) outlets.

40 Acres (2025) | Post-apocalyptic thriller

After a series of plagues and wars, civilization has fallen. The Freeman family is holed up on a farm, where they’re learning to survive and defend themselves against raiders. But their security is threatened when the family’s firstborn son ventures outside the farm’s fence and falls in love. (Kinda sounds like Arcadian, huh?). You can rent 40 Acres from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, July 22.
