New on Hulu this week

Dope Girls | Hulu | Drama

Series premiere, Monday, July 28: In this series based on the nonfiction book by Marek Kohn, World War I is over, and London is getting back to regular business. In the Soho district, Kate Galloway (Julianne Nicholson, Mare of Easttown) runs a club and raises her daughter, Evie (Eilidh Fisher, Call the Midwife), on her own. This, while contending with returning soldiers who want women to go back to the kitchen—plus a rookie cop (Eliza Scanlen) with something to prove. All six episodes stream on Hulu today.

New on Netflix this week

Leanne | Netflix | Comedy

Series premiere, Thursday, July 31: A sitcom starring a successful comedian, using only her first name as a title, essentially playing herself in a starting-over-in-life plot, produced by Chuck Lorre? Yup, we’ve seen those before. Fortunately, these shows are often pretty decent. Longtime stand-up comic Leanne Morgan, however, is sort of new to the screen, with only one comedy special and one film role preceding this show, on which she’s the creator, writer, executive producer, and star. If Morgan is good enough to land this gig as her third screen credit, Leanne is worth giving a shot. All 16 episodes stream on Netflix starting today.

Pro tip: Here’s your reminder about the special episode of The Sandman, which drops Thursday, July 31 on Netflix.

New on Peacock this week

Twisted Metal | Peacock | Action, comedy, science fiction

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, July 31: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy— Twisted Metal, the action/sci-fi comedy based on the popular PlayStation games, sure is a lot of fun. It’s about to get even more enjoyable with Anthony Carrigan—Barry fans will recognize him as the fan-favorite goofball NoHo Hank—joining the cast for this second season. Speakin’ of the season, it’s 20% bigger, with 12 episodes and—we hope—at least that much more explosive action. New episodes weekly through August 28.

New on Apple TV+ this week

Chief of War | Apple TV+ | Drama

Limited series premiere, Friday, August 1: Co-creator Jason Momoa stars (as the Hawaiian warrior Ka’iana) alongside a cast of mostly Polynesian actors in this epic historical miniseries about the unification and colonization of Hawaii at the turn of the 19th Century. Plot twist: This time, history is told from the perspective of the colonized, not the colonizers. Two episodes stream today, and the remaining seven eps will arrive on Apple TV+ weekly.

New on HBO and HBO Max this week

Marc Maron: Panicked | HBO, HBO Max | Stand-up comedy

Special, Friday, August 1, 8:00 p.m. ET: Marc Maron’s comedy is emotionally raw, angsty, honest, wise, and highly relatable. The title of his sixth stand-up special (second for HBO) is a hint that he’s feeling particularly raw right now—like we all are. “I know the world we’re living in is difficult and it’s scary,” Maron says in Panicked’s trailer. “So I said to myself, ‘Marc, why don’t you just be entertaining? People need entertainment.’ I don’t think I got into this to be entertaining.” I think I get it: He processes a lot of personal stuff through his comedy and achieves a connection with his audience, ultimately helping us to process in the, uh, process.

New on Shudder this week

The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs—Season 7 New Episode Premiere Watch Party | Shudder | Horror

New episode, Friday, August 1, 9:00 p.m. ET: Okay, so a few times a season, horror host extraordinaire doesn’t tell us which two horror movies he’ll introduce and illuminate for fans of Shudder’s The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Tonight is one of those times. Both films remain TBA at press time, but it shouldn’t really matter because, for horror fans, a significant part of the show’s attraction is hanging out with Joe Bob. No matter what, you’re gonna laugh and you’re gonna learn something. And since TBA means no trailer, please enjoy this Season 7 clip where Joe Bob drops science on the history of slashers.

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

Bride Hard (2025) | Comedy, action

Oh, the title makes this movie sound sooooo stupid. But sometimes a mindless summer action comedy, no matter how bad, scratches the itch that other films can’t reach. In this one, Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids) plays a badass secret agent who happens to be the maid of honor at a wedding invaded by a group of mercenaries. So, of course, Wilson opens an Ozempic-powered can of whoop-ass to defend the bride (Anna Camp) and her guests. You can rent Bride Hard from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, July 29.
