New on TV this weekend

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include new seasons of Such Brave Girls (Hulu) and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FXX and Hulu). Also, we have another reboot of Dexter (Paramount+ with SHOWTIME), another series based on Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch book series (Prime Video), another Stephen King adaptation (MGM+), and some Oscar bait called Hot Spring Shark Attack! on VOD. Let’s hit the couch!

Night owl? Peep what’s on late-night TV this week.

New on Hulu this week

Such Brave Girls | Hulu | Comedy

Season 2 premiere, Monday, July 7: A dysfunctional family of three—Josie (Kat Sadler), her sister Billie (Lizzie Davidson, Sadler’s sis IRL), and their mother Deb (Louise Brealey, no relation)—are traumatized and full of themselves, yet somehow “bursting with misplaced, terrifying love,” according to the BAFTA Award-winning series’ press materials. Imagine the awkward hijinks/major catastrophes that crew gets up to. Actually, you don’t have to imagine. Both seasons are streaming on Hulu as of today. Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners) directs.

New on Prime Video this week

Ballard | Prime Video | Drama

Series premiere, Wednesday, July 9: Amazon Prime Originals just can’t quit Michael Connelly, whose Detective Harry Bosch novels generated seven seasons of Bosch and three seasons of Bosch: Legacy. The series finale of the latter’s third and final season introduced Detective Renée Ballard (Nikita’s Maggie Q), who debuted in Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show and worked alongside Bosch in five subsequent novels. So maybe we haven’t seen the last of Harry Bosch, even as Renée Ballard takes the lead on a series of cold cases. All 10 episodes stream today.

New on FXX and Hulu this week

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia | FXX, Hulu | Comedy

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, July 3: It’s not unusual, post-pandemic, for there to be three-year gaps between seasons—but it still sucks! At least this second and final season of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is finally upon us. According to Netflix, it will have 11 episodes and (just like the first season) a 12th bonus ep. Storylines are again derived from the comics, so expect familiar, fan-favorite stories like “Season of Mists” and “The Sandman: Overture,” plus some surprises for die-hard fans. The first six episodes stream today, the remaining five come July 24, and the bonus episode streams July 31.

New on Netflix this week

Too Much | Netflix | Comedy, drama

Series premiere, Thursday, July 10: If you watch Hacks on HBO Max, you’re probably already enamored of Megan Stalter’s character—the kooky, adorably overconfident Kayla. In this Lena Dunham-created romantic comedy series, Stalter plays Jessica, a thirtysomething workaholic who moves to London to start over and find herself. She immediately falls for Felix (Will Sharpe, The White Lotus), a handsome singer-songwriter with a litany of complications (like groupies). The cast also includes Naomi Watts, Rhea Perlman, Stephen Fry, and more. All 10 episodes stream on Netflix today.

New on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME this week

Dexter: Resurrection | Paramount+ with SHOWTIME | Drama

Series premiere, Friday, July 11: “He’s back . . . again. For the second time.” At least the Paramount+/SHOWTIME press release is self-aware. After the failed prequel and a sequel series where he died, forensic blood-spatter expert/ace serial murderer Dexter Morgan magically still lives—in New York City instead of Miami. He brought some friends along, though, including Jack Alcott (as Dexter’s son/would-be killer), James Remar (Dexter’s dad), John Lithgow (Arthur Mitchell, aka the Trinity Killer), David Zayas (Angel Batista), and Jimmy Smits (Miguel Prado). And look out for familiar new faces, including David Dastmalchian, Peter Dinklage, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Uma Thurman, and more. Two episodes hit Paramount+ today and air live on SHOWTIME starting Sunday.

New on MGM+ this week

The Institute | MGM+ | Sci-fi, drama

Series premiere, Friday, July 11: This one must be good. The TV rights for Stephen King’s 2019 novel of the same name sold the day the book was published, and this adaptation comes to us from writer David E. Kelley (Goliath) and director Jack Bender (Lost). The story goes like this: Genius Luke Ellis, 12, is kidnapped from his bed by intruders who just silently killed his parents. He awakens in the titular place, among other children with supernaturally talented minds. Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Barnes, and Joe Freeman star. We get the usual two episodes today, with the other six coming weekly.

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

Hot Spring Shark Attack (2025)

Shark Week doesn’t kick off for another week, but we’re already seeing shark movies and specials breaching like great whites off the coast of South Africa. I mean, green-screen shark movies are already kinda doin’ that year-round, but scientists (read: entertainment journalists) have definitely noted an uptick this month. Anyway, this live-action (except, you know, for the CGI stuff) Japanese joint (also called Onsen Shark) adds anime and kaiju energy to Sharknado cheese as sharks start popping up in hot springs (onsen). We can rent Hot Spring Shark Attack from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Friday, July 11.
