This week’s What to Watch picks include new AMC crime drama Parish, the third season of Is It Cake?, the premiere of Holly Madison docuseries Lethally Blonde, Ewan McGregor’s period drama A Gentleman In Moscow, and MLB Opening Day baseball action. Sun’s out, TV’s on!

What’s new on TV this week

Parish (AMC)

Parish | AMC, AMC+ | Drama

Series premiere, Sunday, March 31: After his son is murdered and his luxury car business falls apart, Gracian “Gray” Parish (Giancarlo Esposito) slides back into his previous career as a wheelman for a criminal syndicate. But is he in it for money or revenge? High-octane crime thriller Parish, an adaptation of the British series The Driver, isn’t ambiguous about Gray’s vengeful intent: things are about to get ugly, fast. The six-episode series also stars Bradley Whitford, Paula Malcomson, and Skeet Ulrich.

What to watch on Netflix this week

The Wages of Fear (Netflix)

The Wages of Fear | Netflix | Action, drama

Movie premiere, Friday, March 29: This is the third remake of The Wages of Fear since the 1953 original because a good story is always a good story. That story: A team of specialists has 24 hours to drive two truckloads of nitroglycerine across the desert to blow up a flaming oil refinery before it explodes on its own—it’s a volatile situation all around. Like the original, Netflix’s The Wages of Fear is a French production; Franck Gastambide (Taxi 5), Alban Lenoir (Lost Bullet), and Sofiane Zermani (No Limit) star.

Is It Cake (Netflix)

Is It Cake? | Netflix | Reality, competition

Season 3 premiere, Friday, March 29: Is It Cake? is the simplest baking competition show out there: Contestants create cakes that are indistinguishable from groups of everyday items they’re placed among, then celebrity judges attempt to pick out the imposter cakes. Besides tricking the judgers, contestants can win even more loot by choosing an actual pile of money instead of replica cake cash. Basically, it’s just a whole lotta cake, money, and hilarity presided over by host Mikey Day (Saturday Night Live).

What to watch on Max this week

Lethally Blonde (ID)

Lethally Blonde | ID, Max | Documentary

Series premiere, Monday, March 25: Fresh off the second season of The Playboy Murders, former Playmate and Girls Next Door star Holly Madison is back hosting another string of grim tales about butchered beauties. Lethally Blonde looks into the untimely deaths of adult film stars, OnlyFans influencers, exotic dancers, and even a Penthouse Pet of the Year over the course of six episodes—but they’re not all blonde or women. Episodes drop on Max the same day that they air on ID.

Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show (HBO)

Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show | HBO, Max | Comedy, reality

Series premiere, Friday, March 29: Comedian Jerrod Carmichael describes his new Reality Show as him “trying to self-Truman Show myself,” but in that movie, Truman was unaware that his life was being filmed, so … huh? It’s probably best not to think too hard about the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, a messy but endearing snapshot of Carmichael’s personal life that comes off as more real in eight episodes than the Kardashians ever did in 300. While you’re on Max, check out Rothaniel, his 2022 special.

What to watch on Prime Video this week

American Rust Broken Justice (Prime Video)

American Rust: Broken Justice | Prime Video | Drama

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, March 28: American Rust premiered on SHOWTIME in 2021, the same year as Mare of Easttown, another gloomy crime saga set in the less scenic corners of Pennsylvania. The story of Rust Belt police chief Del (Jeff Daniels) covering for the suspected murderer and son of his girlfriend Grace (Maura Tierney) remained unresolved after SHOWTIME canceled the series, but then Prime Video stepped in and added Broken Justice for extra Dad Drama juice. All 10 episodes stream on March 28.

The Baxters (Prime Video)

The Baxters | Prime Video | Drama

Series premiere, Thursday, March 28: Another sprawling family drama based on a bestselling book series? Yes, but The Baxters stars Roma Downey and Ted McGinley, two of the most beloved actors of ’90s TV (for Touched by an Angel and Married … with Children, respectively). Here, they’re Elizabeth and John Baxter, parents to five adult children who have all kinds of suburban people probs, including a daughter whose professor husband is having an affair with a student. All 10 episodes stream on March 28.

Time | BritBox | Drama

Season 2 premiere, Wednesday, March 27: The first season of the BAFTA-winning prison drama Time starred Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire). Season 2 features some equally impressive star power, with Jodi Whittaker (Doctor Who) and Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) stepping into the jumpsuits for a whole new story behind bars. Orla (Comer) is a single mom who finds herself incarcerated with heroin addict Kelsey (Ramsey). All three episodes of Time drop on March 27.

A Gentleman In Moscow (Paramount+)

A Gentleman In Moscow | Paramount+ with SHOWTIME | Drama

Miniseries premiere, Friday, March 29: With the Russian Revolution just ending in 1923, what’s to become of Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor), a man on the wrong side of history? He’s sentenced to exile in Moscow’s Hotel Metropol, facing execution if he ever steps outside. A Gentleman In Moscow, based on the acclaimed Amor Towles novel, takes a bleak scenario and turns it into a charming and insightful journey of self-discovery. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Alexa Goodall also star.
