Night owl? Peep who’s on late-night TV this week.

New on Prime Video this week

The Runarounds | Prime Video | Drama, music

Series premiere, Monday, Sept. 1: Remember the ‘90s musical drama The Heights? Like that series, The Runarounds—from the creators of Netflix’s Outer Banks—is a band-centric, soapy teen drama. This time, we’re based in Wilmington, North Carolina instead of a fictional town. Otherwise, it’s a similar story. After graduation, a group of teens forms a band in search of stardom while also navigating love, sowing wild oats, and forming enduring bonds. The entire eight-episode series streams on Prime Video today.

New on Comedy Central this week

Beavis and Butt-Head | Comedy Central | Adult animation, comedy

Season 3 premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 3: Promising “Uhhh new era of stupid,” the third season of the reboot that’s officially titled Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head is back on live TV thanks to Comedy Central. Does that mean the show will still stream on Paramount+? Uhhh . . . I don’t know yet. But it’s a safe bet you’ll be able to find the new episodes, which air live on Wednesdays, on Comedy Central Video on Demand sooner or later.

New on Peacock this week

The Paper | Peacock | Comedy

Series premiere, Thursday, Sept. 4: Do you miss The Office? Well, Greg Daniels (creator of the US version we’re talkin’ about) is sending the documentary crew that chronicled the exploits of Dunder Mifflin’s variously wacky employees to follow around the staff of a Toledo, Ohio newspaper. With Dunder Mifflin’s own Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez) on the paper’s masthead, it sounds like Daniels and co-creator Michael Koman (Nathan for You) wanna recapture some of The Office’s lightning in a bottle. I hope they do. The Office (and Parks and Recreation) are two comfort comedies I sorely miss. Recycled ideas or not, I’m ready to subscribe to The Paper. Four episodes debut today, then two eps will drop weekly until September 25.

New on video-on-demand (VOD) this week

Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex | Rent on Prime Video | Music, documentary

Movie, Friday, Sept. 5: Bang a gong, hop into your Jeepster, and get ready to boogie! Ethan Silverman’s film about Marc Bolan, aka T. Rex, is a glittery portal into the glam rock legend’s world. You’ll learn about Bolan’s career and music through archival footage and interviews (Elton John, Ringo Starr), plus new cover songs by musical luminaries like Nick Cave, Peaches, John Cameron Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, his son Rolan Bolan, and more. Holla at your late, great, 20th Century Boy!

New on HBO and HBO Max this week

Task | HBO, HBO Max | Drama

Limited series premiere, Sunday, Sept. 7, 9:00 p.m. ET: In this seven-episode limited series from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, Mark Ruffalo plays a Philadelphia-based FBI agent leading a task force charged with investigating a string of violent robberies led by a family man (Banshee, Outer Range). The cast also includes Martha Plimpton and Emilia Jones. Only the first episode streams today; you’ll have to wait for the rest to come weekly on Sunday nights.

New on AMC+ this week

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon | AMC, AMC+ | Drama, horror

Season 3 premiere, Sunday, Sept. 7, 9:00 p.m. ET: Heads up, Walking Dead fans! Norman Reedus is back for an all-new third season of this Daryl Dixon-centric spinoff. In Season 3, we get to find out if Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) manage to get from France to England and what transpires there. Certainly it’ll involve zombies who want to munch on the pair like so many crumpets. If you need to catch up on the series and you have Shudder, you’re in luck: The first season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon landed on the service on September 1.

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

From the director of Love, Gilda and from the producers of The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Lucy and Desi comes this doc about a woman who, with her warm heart and wacky-wise puppets, pioneered kids’ television with messages of self-esteem some 12 years before Mr. Rogers’ trolley came chuggling along. You can rent Shari & Lamb Chop from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, September 2.
