New on TV this week
This week’s “What To Watch” picks include Monster: The Ed Gein Story on Netflix, Abbott Elementary on ABC and Hulu, The Toxic Avenger on video-on-demand, and Chad Powers on Hulu.
We’ve also got some anime recs from guest columnist Olivia Bono—keep an eye out for this season’s full anime schedule when it drops later this week. Let’s hit the couch!
New on Hulu this week
Chad Powers | Hulu | Comedy
Series premiere, Monday, Sept. 29: This sports comedy might not star Eli Manning like the original viral ESPN+ short, but Glen Powell really takes Manning’s character and runs with it. As the trailer describes, it’s “a Mrs. Doubtfire, but with football.”
New on Netflix this week
Monster: The Ed Gein Story | Netflix | Drama, thriller
Limited series premiere, Friday, Oct. 3: Monster is Ryan Murphy’s third serial killer series with Netflix, this time starring Charlie as Ed Gein. The mid-century killer would go on to inspire horror filmmakers due to his habit of making furniture out of his victims (yuck). A bit too gruesome for me, but true crime fans will love it.
New on Crunchyroll this week
GNOSIA | Crunchyroll | Anime
Series premiere, Saturday, October 4: Ever wish Among Us was a little more anime? In this time-looping sci-fi anime, a crew full of colorfully dressed individuals have to find the imposter—the Gnosia—and kick them out before it has the chance to murder them. Over, and over, and over again.
New on ABC and Hulu this week
Season 5 premiere, Wednesday, Oct. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET: If you haven’t watched ABC’s award-winning sitcom yet, you’re missing out on one of the most popular titles of the decade. Abbott Elementary’s fifth season covers a new school year with new challenges, and this time Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) really has her work cut out for her.
Airs live on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET and streams on Hulu the next day.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? | Crunchyroll | Anime
Series premiere, Friday, October 3: Over the last few years, we’ve seen a lot of isekai anime about dating sim villainesses—usually an influential noblewoman engaged to a prince, who then leaves her for a meeker, “nicer” girl. But this isn’t an isekai, and this villainess doesn’t have the benefit of a past life’s memories. Instead, she has her fists. And man, is she good at punching.

New on Apple TV+ this week
The Sisters Grimm | Apple TV+ | Animation, family
Series premiere, Friday, October 3: As a kid, I loved reading The Sisters Grimm books—a series about two girls solving fairy-tale mysteries. Hollywood is on a roll adapting books from my childhood right now, bringing ‘00s hits to a new generation. Wait, is that because they expect my generation are parents by now? Hold on, watch this trailer while I have an existential crisis.
New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week
The Toxic Avenger (2023) | Superhero, horror
Intrepid horror expert Randy Harward is once again out this week, and once again he’s contacting me from the great beyond to bring you a movie rec. Although he hasn’t watched the trailer, and I have, so only one of us can tell you how much gore is in this one. (Hint: it’s a lot.)
Based on the film from 1984, this remake reimagines the Toxic Avenger as Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage), a terminally ill janitor who works for a corrupt pharmaceutical company.
You can rent The Toxic Avenger from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, September 30.
