Our Thrillterns rank the season’s scariest streams

Every spooky season, the same question haunts the couch: What should we watch tonight? So we handed the remote to two of our CableTV.com Thrillterns, Alex DiVincenzo and Aaliyah (Leah) Rowell, and let them loose on a stack of new releases, cult favorites, and one slasher classic.

The Thrillterns scored each movie, named their scariest moments, and owned up to the duds. Below, you’ll find all seven picks counted down from lowest score to highest, plus where to stream each one.

7. “Feed” (2026)

In this Irish vampire thriller, a weekend getaway for a grieving friend turns deadly when her blood awakens the Dearg-Due, an ancient vampire that turns the group against itself.

Leah found the story interesting, but “the plot kind of dragged,” and most of the characters didn’t win her over, so she rates it 4/10.

The exception was the vampire herself, Leah’s favorite horror character of the bunch: “She was never the monster but more of a victim.”

Want a better indie bite? Leah’s hidden-gem pick was “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” and our other Thrilltern, Alex, ranked its villain Lil’ Death among horror’s most underrated big bads.

6. “Reeker” (2006)

Originally released straight to DVD, “Reeker” has found a second life on Tubi. A group of college kids gets stranded at a deserted motel, where they’re haunted by visions of the dead and hunted by a monstrous manifestation of death. Alex likened the movie to “‘Jeepers Creepers’ with a dash of ‘Carnival of Souls.'” Sounds pretty weird.

Everything in “Reeker” was “overtly early 2000s,” from the fashion and pale green tint to a Michael Ironside appearance. Alex called it the least effective of his picks because it “takes itself a bit too seriously,” but the twist helped it land a 6/10.

Hey, at least it’s free to stream on Tubi *shrugs*.

5. “Black Box” (2026)

“Final Destination 5” director Steven Quale turns a routine domestic flight into a sci-fi horror nightmare full of malfunctions, supernatural events, and alien interference. Leah said it “started off slow but kicked in about 15 minutes,” with effects and a story that hold up.

She wasn’t sold on every passenger, but she rooted for the main character the whole way, and the alien reminded her of the “Cloverfield” monster. Leah’s 6/10 score comes with a clear disclaimer: “If you’re into sci-fi horror, then check this out.”

4. “Never After Dark” (2026)

Alex called Dave Boyle’s “Never After Dark” “Japan’s answer to ‘Insidious’ — at least at first.” Moeka Hoshi stars as a traveling medium who encounters a grotesque apparition unlike any she’s seen before, and it brings dire real-world consequences.

The film’s slow-burn pacing leans into J-horror tradition with tense atmosphere, effective scares, and an emotional core. Then a second-half wrinkle sends it somewhere new, a turn Alex claimed, “never feels unnatural.” Packed with what he called several great set pieces, it scored a 7/10.

3. “Don’t Move” (2026)

Leah went into “Don’t Move” blind — bold move. Based on the novel by James Murray and Darren Wearmouth, it follows a church retreat that pitches camp in the wrong corner of the Ozark wilderness, right in the territory of a giant prehistoric arachnid.

Leah called it “a pleasant surprise and a good laugh,” with a fast start, a strong ending, and a great cast. As a self-described arachnophobe, she came out “even more creeped out” and swore off camping for good. It was her top pick (7/10) for horror newbies, as long as they can handle eight legs.

2. “Halloween II” (1981)

Halloween is Alex’s favorite horror franchise, so he revisits at least one entry every spooky season. “Halloween II” picks up exactly where John Carpenter’s 1978 original left off, with Michael Myers tracking Laurie Strode to the local hospital. Alex said it keeps the first film’s look and tension “while amping up the gore for a post-‘Friday the 13th’ world,” earning the sequel an 8/10.

While “Halloween II” isn’t as effective as the original, Michael remains “the ultimate boogeyman,” and his expressionless mask lets viewers project their own fears onto it. As for Alex’s survival odds on Halloween night: “There’s no way I’d make it to the end credits.”

1. “Backrooms” (2026)

Kane Parsons was just 19 when he turned his viral web series into “Backrooms,” and Alex praised it as “an auspicious directorial debut.” Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as a furniture store owner in 1990 who discovers a hidden doorway into a never-ending liminal space. Alex’s verdict: “Every second spent exploring the expansive yet claustrophobic void is riveting.”

The film’s psychological approach caught Alex off guard, and its found footage-style descent into the backrooms was the scariest moment of his entire watchlist, and it’s his go-to pick for horror newbies and diehards alike.

Already saw “Backrooms” and liked it? Alex suggested chasing it with “Exit 8,” “It Ends,” or the older creeper “Session 9.” For more genre standouts led by actors like Ejiofor, check out our Horror Noire picks.
