New on Netflix this week

Felipe Esparza: Raging Fool | Netflix | Stand-up comedy

Special, Tuesday, February 11: In his second Netflix stand-up special (fourth overall), Felipe Esparza has advice on choosing a partner. “You gotta marry somebody opposite of what you are, man,” he says. “There’s no such thing as ‘ride or die.’ Here’s what’s gonna happen, bro: You’re gonna die. And she’s gonna riiiide away.” And, once you do attract that elusive opposite, you gotta work hard to keep them. “My wife, she has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Once I get my GED, we’re gonna be a power couple … If she dies tomorrow, I’ll be homeless in three days.” Evidently, Esparza heeds his own advice, partnering with his wife, Lesa Odaniel-Esparza, who directed and co-executive produced Raging Fool.

Cobra Kai | Netflix | Drama, action

Season 6, Part 3 premiere, Thursday, February 13: After six seasons, Cobra Kai—the smash series that deepened The Karate Kid canon—has only five episodes left until the series finale. The eps will deal with the death of Kwon Sae-Jung (Brandon H. Lee) and feature one last crowd-pleasing cameo from the original Karate Kid trilogy. We’ve seen almost everyone—who’s left? Parade speculates it could be Darryl Vidal, stunt double for Pat Morita, who played Mr. Miyagi in the original films and fought Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in the first film’s epic tournament. That’d be cool—if Vidal could play a convincing Miyagi, perhaps in a flashback or dream sequence. Otherwise, only hardcore Karate Kid fans will care.

New on Hulu this week

SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) | Hulu | Music documentary

Movie, Thursday, February 13: Funk music progenitor Sly Stone and his band Sly and the Family Stone get the documentary treatment from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (Summer of Soul). Hulu’s press release says, “The film captures the band’s rise, reign, and subsequent fadeout while shedding light on the unseen burden that comes with success for Black artists in America.” The list of interviewees for the film tells you just how much Stone impacted music: soul singers Chaka Khan and D’Angelo, musicians/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (The Time, Janet Jackson), Mothership pilot George Clinton (Parliament Funkadelic), rappers Andre 3000 (Outkast) and Q-Tip, bandmate/fellow funk legend Larry Graham, label exec Clive Davis, and more.

New on Shudder this week

The Dead Thing | Shudder | Horror

Movie, Friday, February 14: In this Shudder exclusive film, Alex (Blu Hunt) is stagnant in her personal and professional lives. She finally finds an interesting guy—Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen) who makes her feel alive, but the dude disappears after a mind-blowing night of passion. Blu tracks Kyle down, only to dig up what the synopsis calls “a grave supernatural secret.” The Dead Thing is part of a Shudder live watch party on Valentine’s Day with another romantic horror film, the fantastic Attachment.

New on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME this week

Yellowjackets | Paramount+ with SHOWTIME | Psychological horror, drama

Season 3 premiere, Friday, February 14: Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson’s psychological horror-drama returns for a third season. On the flashback side, the ‘90s-era high-school girls’ soccer team survived a devastating winter, but they’re still marooned in the wilderness, and conflicts within the group threaten their chances of survival. Meanwhile, in the future, the now-women contend with their massive secrets bubbling up to the surface. Two episodes premiere Valentine’s Day on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. If you’re watching on live SHOWTIME, the episodes air on Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. ET.

New on Max this week

The White Lotus | Max | Drama, mystery

Season 3 premiere, Friday, January 16: Parker Effin’ Posey. Do you need me to say more about the third season of Mike White’s twisty mystery drama? Well, I’d love to, but HBO is keepin’ the deets close to its chest (the show is, after all, a mystery). All we know is the setting (a resort, as always, but in Thailand this time) and cast. Of course, there are some other standout names—Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones), Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus season one), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (Arnold Schwarzenegger’s loins). But, man, Parker Posey effin’ elevates everything she’s in—even acclaimed series like The White Lotus.

New on FOX this week

Animation Domination | FOX | Adult animation

Series premieres, Sunday, February 16, 8 p.m. ET: Do any of you get the Sunday Scaries, where you freak out about the imminent Monday? If you need a distraction, try FOX’s Sunday-night Animation Domination. If this two-hour dose of delightfully childish adult jokes works, you’ll forget about the Sunday Scaries for at least two hours. You’re welcome. I wish I could do more. Here’s the sked (all times ET):

  • Family Guy: 8 p.m.
  • Grimsburg: 8:30 p.m.
  • The Great North: 9 p.m.
  • Krapopolis: 9:30 p.m.

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

Rez Comedy (2025)

“Grief is where I learned my humor from,” says Keith “Bubbas” Nahanee in Rez Comedy. “We just wanna bring laughter so we can put that grief down for a bit.” That’s no surprise; most comedians agree that a lot of comedy comes from pain. They process it by tapping into their trauma and making it funny, and there’s often an underlying serious point to it. We, the audience, laugh along with them and enjoy the leftover food for thought. In this documentary, Nahanee (who co-directs with Quentin Lee) and eight more talented Indigenous comics serve a smorgasbord of belly laughs and leftovers that really stick to your mental ribs. Rez Comedy comes to video on demand (VOD) on Friday, February 14.
