New on TV this week

This week’s What To Watch picks include two Latinx comedies (Envious, Love You to Death), AI-fear exploitation with a twist (Cassandra), a generational battle (The Z-Suite), a trans-acceptance dramedy (Clean Slate), Super Bowl commercials, Super Bowl LIX, Puppy Bowl XXI, and more. Now let’s hit the couch (and maybe adopt a puppy)!

New on CBS and Paramount+ this week

Super Bowl Greatest Commercials: Funniest of All-Time | CBS, Paramount+ | Comedy special

Series premiere, Wednesday, February 5, 9 p.m. ET: WAAAAZZZZUUUUUP! Super Bowl commercials—they’re almost a co-headliner with the NFL’s championship event. They have to be in order to compete with football fans’ bathroom break/nacho plate refill time. If you’re a fan of these extra-quirky ads for beer, cars, chips, candy bars, and other things for sale in America, you’ll love this special in which you get to vote for the F.O.A.T. (funniest of all time).

Check out this Super Bowl ad compilation (left) to see some of tonight’s potential candidates. Nate Burleson (CBS Morning, NFL Today) and actress Daniela Ruah (NCIS: Los Angeles) host. Airs live on CBS, streams the next day on Paramount+.

New on Netflix this week

Envious | Netflix | Comedy, drama

Season 2 premiere, Wednesday, February 5: The first season of this Argentinean comedy-drama hit Netflix last September. It begins with 39-year-old Vicky bottom-lining her boyfriend: marriage or else. Things didn’t go Vicky’s way, so she walked, embarking on a hilarious search for herself—and a new love. The season’s ending (no spoilers) left audiences wanting more, and they didn’t have to wait long for a second season.

New on Apple TV+ this week

Love You to Death | Apple TV+ | Comedy

Series premiere, Wednesday, February 5: Now we fly from Argentina to Spain for creator/director Dani de la Orden’s dramedy (called A Muerte in his home country) about a cancer patient (Joan Amargós) who reconnects with his pregnant childhood friend Marta (Verónica Echegui). You see where this is goin’, right? Yup, we’re headed to will-they-or-won’t-they territory, and the in-flight snacks include laughter and tears. Watch the first two episodes tonight, and the rest on Wednesdays through March 12.

New on Netflix this week

Cassandra | Netflix | Science fiction, horror, drama

Series premiere, Thursday, February 6: This six-episode German miniseries taps into our renegade-AI fears with a smart home system/robot (AI Cassandra, played by Lavinia Wilson). Of course, the plot is familiar: Cassandra is first a technological godsend, then a cyber demon that effs up its human family’s life. Familiar? Oh, yeah. But The Powers have us all primed for these robo-horror stories, anyway. And, since they might come true, we can think of Cassandra as an orientation for the AI-pocalypse. But wait—there’s a twist! Cassandra was built in the 1970s, so maybe the series will end with her running out of the 16 “D” batteries the robot needs to run.

New on Prime Video this week

Clean Slate | Amazon Prime Video | Comedy

Series premiere, Thursday, February 6: Alabama car wash owner Harry Slate (comedian George Wallace) is excited about the imminent return of his long-gone son (Laverne Cox, Orange is the New Black), but is shocked to learn his boy is now a woman. Given the series’ premise, we expect uncomfy hijinks and a dose of high drama—and chemistry—from Wallace and Cox. Produced by legendary hit-show factory Norman Lear.

New on Tubi this week

The Z-Suite | Tubi | Comedy

Series premiere, Thursday, February 6: We know, we know, Tubi Original shows and movies are of questionable quality. We’re willing to give this one a shot, though. No, it’s not a “zom-com” about a hotel catering to the undead, which would fit right alongside other Tubi productions. Instead, the show finds Gen-X ad execs Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls, Parenthood) and Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians) fighting back after being replaced by their firm’s much younger social media team: the “Z-Suite.” After tonight’s two-episode premiere, new eps come weekly.

New on Animal Planet and Max this week

Puppy Bowl XXI | Animal Planet, Max | Sports, animals

Special, Sunday, February 9, 2 p.m. ET: Have you ever drank too much at a Super Bowl party and wound up adopting a dog? We’ve all been there. Alcohol unleashes our depression and lowers our impulse control to the point that we think a new puppy will fix everything. Or maybe we just love dogs and are powerless to resist this three-hour parade of 130+ adoptable rescue floofs. Now, who’s a good boy?!

New on FOX and Tubi this week

Super Bowl LIX | FOX, Telemundo, Tubi | FOOTBALL!

NFL football championship, Sunday, February 9, 6:30 p.m. ET: Woo-hoo! It’s finally here, the annual day where we gain weight, lose money, and act like watching commercials is fun. This, while also pretending NFL seasons are as authentic and unscripted as pro wrestling. Super Bowl LIX (that’s 59 in English—’Murrica!) pits the Kansas City Chiefs and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend against the Philadelphia Eagles and, I dunno, one of their players. (Sorry, readers, I don’t football. But I hope you enjoy yourselves tonight.)

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

Good Bad Things (2025)

If you’re in need of a soul-cleansing “you’ll laugh, you’ll cry” flick, this’ll do the trick (and I’ve only seen the trailer). Good Bad Things is about a man with muscular dystrophy—and a history of broken relationships—who tries out the dating app his design firm wants to woo. Unexpectedly, he matches with a charming photographer, and sparks fly as she teaches him to accept himself and his condition. Good Bad Things comes to video on demand (VOD) on Tuesday, February 4.
