New on Comedy Central this week

Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse – MAGA: The Next Generation | Comedy Central, Paramount+ | Special

Special, Monday, May 19, 11:30 p.m. ET/PT: The Daily Show correspondent continues his Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse series, taking his popular, hilarious man-on-the-street thing to Trump rallies, UFC events, college campuses, and even the “Gulf of America.” The mission? To talk to young people who voted for Trump in large numbers about being MAGA. This should be insightful (in a funny way).

Nine Perfect Strangers | Hulu | Drama

Season two premiere, Wednesday, May 21: Nearly four years after its debut season aired comes a second season of this drama, where a group of nine strangers (played by an ensemble cast) visit a mysterious resort in hopes of changing their lives. A second season is significant in that Nine Perfect Strangers—based on the novel by Liane Moriarty—was meant to be a limited, one-and-done deal. Now it’s become an anthology series with a new plot and cast—kinda like The White Lotus.

New on Netflix this week

Sirens | Netflix | Comedy, drama

Special, Thursday, May 22: Not to be confused with the Denis Leary-produced EMT comedy that aired on USA in the mid-2010s, this five-episode limited series from Molly Smith Metzler (Maid) is a dark comedy about women, power, and class. Meganna Fahy (The White Lotus) and Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) play sisters Devon and Simone DeWitt. When Simone takes a job as personal assistant to enigmatic billionaire Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore), Devon finds the employer-employee relationship unsettling and decides to intervene, not realizing who she’s up against. Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton also star.

Big Mouth | Netflix | Adult animation

Season eight premiere, Friday, May 23: Would you believe that this puerile, raunchy, adult-animated series is Netflix’s longest-running scripted show? If you’ve experienced it for yourself, you would. Creator/star Nick Kroll’s Big Mouth, for all its dirty, dirty humor is also strangely educational and poignant. In a way, it’s just a cartoon version of Sesame Street with horny hormone monsters and talking junk—which is kind of a beautiful thing. In a perfect world, this would last longer (that’s what she said!). Alas, Big Mouth’s eighth season will be its last.

New on HBO and Max this week

Pee-wee as Himself | HBO, Max | Documentary series

Limited series premiere, Friday, May 23, 8pm ET: First Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) was an underground comedy phenom, then a big movie and TV star, then a disgrace and a punchline. Pee-wee, however, was a character, and the frequently parenthetical Paul Reubens was a real person—not just living, breathing flesh, but authentic, brilliant, and caring. Thanks to this two-part documentary, which is based on a rare, 40-hour, out-of-character interview with Reubens and director Matt Wolf, we get to meet him. RIP, Paul (and Pee-wee).

New on Adult Swim this week

Rick and Morty | Adult Swim, Max | Adult animation

Season 8 premiere, Sunday, May 25, 11pm ET: Season seven of Adult Swim’s popular sci-fi series was the first without the voice work of co-creator Justin Roiland, who was fired in 2023. His replacements—Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty—are pretty good, but the difference is still noticeable. Thankfully, it doesn’t kill the show. In an official press release announcing the eighth season, Adult Swim proclaims, “Life has meaning again! Anything is possible! Look out for adventures with Summer, Jerry, Beth, and the other Beth. Maybe Butter Bot will get a new task? Whatever happens, you can’t keep Rick and Morty down for long. People have tried!” Personally, I can’t wait to see the season finale, which is titled “Hot Rick.” Me-ow.
