New on TV this week
This week’s What To Watch picks include a new FX comedy (Adults) and the third season of And Just Like That… on Max—plus, on Netflix, a new comedy special from Mike Birbiglia and the debut of a new detective drama, Dept. Q, And, of course, there’s more. Let’s hit the couch!
New on Netflix this week
Mike Birbiglia: The Good Life | Netflix | Stand-up comedy
Special, Monday, May 26: The Good Life is stand-up comedian, actor, author, director, producer, screenwriter, and self-professed “Olive Garden Italian” Mike Birbiglia’s fourth Netflix special—and his eighth overall. Of that octet, five specials received nominations or awards. Not only that, Birbigs himself is a two-time Thurber Prize finalist for American Humor and also a recipient of the Kurt Vonnegut Humor Award. I could list even more accolades, but there’s one main reason you should watch this: It’s his “most personal” special. I’m confident it’ll be funny, poignant, relatable, smart, and immensely satisfying. Just ask all those nominating committees.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy | Prime Video | Adult animation, sci-fi, comedy
Season 2 premiere, Tuesday, May 27: An ostensible fusion of Broad City, Futurama, and any medical drama with an all-star cast? I’m in. Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer) are totes-famous surgeons whose talents qualify them for risky cases that have the potential for great good and even greater trouble. This season, the futuristic physicians enjoy their first-season success but must contend with a skeleton from Sleech’s closet. The cast also includes Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin, Maya Rudolph, Andrew Dismukes, singer Sam Smith, and more.
New on FX and Hulu this week
Adults | FX, Hulu | Comedy
Series premiere, Wednesday, May 28, 9 p.m. ET: What if Friends took place in the present day, with a gang composed of helpless zoomers trying to transition out of party life into adulthood (aka “the roast chicken phase of life”) and kinda failing? Comedy gold, right? Adults (originally Snowflakes) must be, since it’s an FX comedy—and FX is on a hot streak with those (see It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Bear, Dave, Baskets, The League, You’re the Worst, Atlanta, What We Do in the Shadows, et al.). All eight episodes stream today on FXNOW and Hulu. Or watch them live, two per week, on FX.
New on Max this week
And Just Like That… | Max | Comedy
Season 3 premiere, Thursday, May 29, 6 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT: This Sex and the City reboot/sequel series was meant to be one season and done, but And Just Like That… proved popular enough to warrant a surprise second season. Two years later, the series’ fans get a third go, with Rosie O’Donnell, Logan Marshall-Green, Mehcad Brooks, and Patti LuPone joining the cast. New episodes debut weekly through the August 14 finale.

This romantic comedy is reminiscent of Cyrano de Bergerac (or Roxanne), but with a twist: A recently divorced man, Mickey, can’t afford alimony payments.
