This week’s “What To Watch” picks include the second seasons of the hit comedy-dramas “Beef” (Netflix) and “Big Mood” (Tubi), the premiere of “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” (Apple TV), and Peter Farrelly’s raunchy action-comedy “Balls Up” (Prime Video).
We’ve also got a nail-biting documentary series on HBO and HBO Max, a new revival of “American Gladiators” (Prime), and a “The Substance”/”The Beauty” copycat called “Thinestra” on video-on-demand (VOD). Let’s hit the couch!
New on HBO and HBO Max this week
“The Dark Wizard” | HBO, HBO Max | Documentary series
Limited series premiere, Tuesday, April 14, 9 p.m. ET/PT: What would make a BASE jumper/climber/wingsuiter controversial? For me, it’s just the fact that Dean Potter puts his life on the line all the time. You know what they say about guys like him: He must be crazy. That’s what this four-part docuseries from directors Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen is about—getting into Potter’s head to learn that maybe he has inner demons, but what he does is rooted in art and spirituality.
New on Prime Video this week
“Balls Up” | Prime Video | Action, comedy
Movie, Wednesday, April 15: I’m a sucker for the Farrelly Brothers’ (working together or solo) brand of heartfelt, gross-out humor. Some of those movies just hit the sweet spot for me, and I love the juxtaposition of the absurd with the tender. That’s not the Farrellys’ only trick, though—just see Peter Farrelly’s Best Picture-winner “Green Book” (2018), a decidedly more mature outing. That said, PF’s latest, “Balls Up” is in no danger of winning an Oscar. It’s just a raunchy, over-the-top comedy about a couple of marketing execs (Mark Wahlberg, Paul Walter Hauser) who pitch a condom sponsorship to the World Cup, sparking a global scandal. I don’t know if there’ll be any tenderness in the story (maybe in the title, eh guys?), but that’s fine; I’m ready for a childishly good time.
New on Apple TV this week
“Margo’s Got Money Troubles” | Apple TV | Comedy, drama
Series premiere, Wednesday, April 15: In this A24 miniseries from David E. Kelley (based on the novel by Rufi Thorpe), Elle Fanning plays Margo, a college dropout who’s reckoning with having a professor’s baby but no income. To support her little family, Margo turns to OnlyFans. Not only does she crush it on OF, she reconnects with her parents—a former Hooters waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) and ex-pro wrestler (Nick Offerman). We get three episodes today and the rest weekly.
New on Netflix this week
“Beef” | Netflix | Comedy, drama
Season 2 premiere, Thursday, April 16: When the first season of the intense Netflix show ended, you could tell the story had nowhere else to go—so there probably wouldn’t be another season. I’m glad I was wrong or, rather, that Netflix found a way to keep a good thing going by making “Beef” an anthology series. That means this second season has a whole new story and cast. The story centers around a fight between a Korean billionaire and his wife, and the cast includes Carey Mulligan (Drive), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein) Cailee Spaeny, Youn Yuh-jung, Song Kang-ho, and more.

New on Tubi this week
“Big Mood” | Tubi | Comedy, drama
Season 2 premiere, Thursday, April 16: Looking for a show to get lost in? I intended to watch a couple of episodes of this Tubi (by way of BBC) comedy this past weekend. Instead, I binged all six episodes—not even minding the ad breaks. Big Mood is a gem. Maggie (Nicola Coughlan, “Derry Girls”) and Eddie (Lydia West) are best friends navigating the chaotic reality of Maggie’s bipolar disorder. Sharp, relatable, darkly hilarious and poignant, it’s the kind of show you can laugh and cry with like a dear friend. I can’t wait to catch up with them in Season 2.

New on Prime Video this week
“American Gladiators” | Prime Video | Competition reality
Series premiere, Friday, April 17: As much as I can’t stand competition reality shows, I have to admit that my inner teen from 1989 is delirious over this 2026 revival. If you’re unaware, “American Gladiators” pits unknown athletes—one man and one woman per episode—against a stable of 16 “gladiators” in a series of challenges and events (kinda like the 1987 movie “The Running Man”) for a $100,000 prize. It’s a total blast and I can’t wait to watch it and pretend, like I used to, that I could totally compete with these swole heroes. WWE SmackDown wrestler Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin hosts.
New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week
“Thinestra” (2026) | Horror, comedy
Add another one to the list of movies and shows like “The Substance,” where personal vanity or body-image issues lead to ooey-gooey-gross body-horror. Why recommend a copycat? Well, ’cause body-horror’s as hot as a new weight-loss drug right now. Incidentally, “Thinestra” follows a young woman who messes around with a miracle skinny pill with worse side effects than Ozempic face (remind you of Ryan Murphy’s series “The Beauty?”). You can rent “Thinestra” from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Tuesday, April 14. But first, ask your doctor if you’re pregnant, nursing, taking MAOIs…
