New anime to watch in Summer 2023
The summer anime season offers a wide array of genres, from goofy isekai to supernatural action to post-apocalyptic comedy. Let’s go over some titles that stood out to us.
Yohane the Parhelion – SUNSHINE in the MIRROR
Yohane the Parhelion is a spinoff of Love Live!, a popular franchise centered around groups of school idols. The franchise spans multiple anime series, as well as a mobile rhythm game.
In SUNSHINE in the MIRROR, 16-year-old Yohane, a singer from the idol group Aqours, returns to her hometown after failing to make it big in the city. But this isn’t the same Yohane (also known as Yoshiko Tsushima) fans may remember from previous titles. This is an alternate universe version of Yohane, who has a talking dog and a magic conductor’s baton.
Both the new anime and the accompanying game (BLAZE in the DEEPBLUE) follow Yohane’s adventures in this new fantasy setting.
Yohane the Parhelion – SUNSHINE in the MIRROR airs Sundays starting July 2 on Crunchyroll.
Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon
No, we’re not making this one up. This anime wins our unofficial award for the season’s wackiest isekai title.
While most isekai protagonists find themselves reborn into the body of a royal or their favorite video game character, Boxxo is reincarnated into the form of the vending machine that killed him. Of course, this is an isekai, so his new life is also in a fantasy world.
Despite his inability to move or talk beyond robotic stock phrases, Boxxo quickly befriends a young hunter named Lammis, and the two of them go on dungeon-crawling adventures while distributing an array of beverages and tasty snacks.
Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon airs Wednesdays starting July 5 on Crunchyroll.
Dark Gathering
Looking for something a little darker than teen idols and sentient vending machines? Dark Gathering has you covered.
Keitarou Gentouga is just starting to reintegrate into society after a traumatizing ghost attack and would do anything to avoid another incident. Unfortunately for him, his first student at his college tutoring job is a very passionate ghost hunter, and Keitarou’s college experience becomes a lot spookier than he expected.
Dark Gathering airs Mondays starting July 10 on HIDIVE.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
From the creators of Alice in Borderland comes the comedic story of an overworked corporate employee who finally finds a release from his stressful, soul-sucking life. Sure, now he has to find a way to survive a brutal zombie apocalypse, but he sees the bright side of things: at least he doesn’t have to go to work anymore.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead airs Sundays starting July 9 on Hulu and Crunchyroll. There’s also a live-action movie coming to Netflix on August 3.

Summer 2023 simulcasts on Crunchyroll

Summer 2023 simulcasts on Funimation
We may have already mourned Funimation, but it’s taking a long time to die. Despite former competitor Crunchyroll moving all new simulcasts to its own platform, there are still a few continuing simulcasts left on the soon-to-be-defunct Funimation site. Unfortunately, the platform gets a little more buggy every time we return to it.
We don’t know when Crunchyroll will officially shut down Funimation, but if you prefer its interface and don’t mind a few unresolved bugs and a much smaller collection of simulcasts, here’s what you can get with a subscription.
New simulcasts on Funimation
- None—they’re over on Crunchyroll!

Summer 2023 simulcasts on Hulu
Hulu hosts some of Crunchyroll’s dubbed content, which makes it a good streaming service option for casual fans who just want to watch the most popular recent anime. Unfortunately, Hulu doesn’t have a lot of new simulcasts this season, so you’re probably better off going to Crunchyroll for the summer
You can also visit Hulu’s buried simulcast page to see what’s new.

Summer 2023 simulcasts on Netflix
Like Hulu, Netflix doesn’t have a ton of new anime this season, but there are a few titles you should keep an eye on, including the new post-apocalyptic show Zom 100. Here’s what you can expect this season.
New and returning anime on Netflix
- Baki Hanma Season 2
- Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy Season 2
- My Happy Marriage
- Record of Ragnarok 2 Part 2
- Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
Summer 2023 simulcasts on Disney+
Disney+’s anime offerings are sorely lacking in the U.S.
Disney+ is joining the anime game with a few new original titles streaming worldwide in 2023. For now, it seems that these titles will stream on Hulu in the U.S., and that “worldwide” title means “everywhere except the U.S.” It’s super misleading!
A lot of the titles on this list are without release dates, so keep in mind that they might not all air this summer.
Upcoming simulcasts on Disney+ (Hulu in the U.S.)
- Synduality: Noir
- PHOENIX: EDEN17
- Murai no Koi
- Project BULLET/BULLET
- Dragons of Wonderhatch
Summer 2023 anime movies in theaters
Sometimes an anime is just too big to be contained by a streaming service. There are a ton of new anime movies coming out in 2023, including Studio Ghibli’s How Do You Live? (July 14) and SPY x FAMILY CODE: White (December 22).
Unfortunately, only a very few anime movies make it to American theaters, and the ones that do make it here do so several months after their Japanese premieres. Right now we only know that How Do You Live? will come to America sometime in 2023 under the new name The Boy and the Heron.
But Studio Ghibli fans will be happy to hear that Fathom Events is hosting another Studio Ghibli Fest in 2023, meaning you can catch your favorite Ghibli hits throughout the year. Most films are showing for only a couple of days, so make sure you plan ahead!
Upcoming anime theatrical releases
- Gridman Universe (July 3, Anime Expo exclusive)
- Castle in the Sky (July 10)
- Psycho-Pass Providence (July 14)
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaibo ON STAGE (July 18)
- The First Slam Dunk (July 28)
- Porco Rosso (August 20)
- The Wind Rises (10th Anniversary) (August 21)
