After a long winter, spring has finally sprung. We’re looking forward to some warmer weather, but if you’re stuck inside during April showers, consider catching some rainy day vibes with this list of new and continuing anime.
Check out some highlights below, including new titles like Skip and Loafer and Hell’s Paradise, or jump right to your favorite anime streaming service.

Spring 2023 anime highlights
This season’s anime titles aren’t quite as long as Winter’s, but there are still some fun titles in there, including I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too and The Aristocrat’s Otherworldly Adventure, Serving Gods Who Go Too Far. Gotta love those isekai names.
Oh, but you want to know about the shows themselves? This season offers a wide variety of anime from Heavenly Delusion to Hell’s Paradise. But our eyes are on the anime returning for new seasons, including Tokyo Mew Mew New, The Ancient Magus’ Bride, and Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage.
Here are a few new and returning titles to look forward to this season.
Hell’s Paradise
Hell’s Paradise is an intense dark fantasy about a ninja in Edo Japan (1603–1867) as he searches for the secret to immortality. He’s doing this in an attempt to escape death row, and must team up with a team of other convicts who were offered a similar deal.
Hell’s Paradise airs Saturdays starting April 1 on Crunchyroll.
Skip and Loafer
Iwakura Mitsumi is a new student at a prestigious university, and she’s determined to succeed in her new big-city life. Skip and Loafer promises a charming rom-com between the overprepared Iwakura and Shima Sousuke, her more relaxed classmate.
(Writer’s note: I also just found out that Skip and Loafer is from the same studio that animated the Professor Layton series, my favorite video games of all time! I’ll be watching for sure.)
Skip and Loafer airs Tuesdays starting April 4 on Crunchyroll.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
This latest entry in the Gundam canon first premiered last fall and is now back for a second season. In the distant future where space wars are fought with high-tech mech suits, a teenage student named Suletta Mercury dreams of becoming a pilot.
Her plans change somewhat when she rescues another piloting student trying to escape their academy, and eventually Suletta finds herself accused of being a witch—a pilot of an illegal and dangerous type of mech, the titular Gundam.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Season 2 airs Sundays starting April 9 on Crunchyroll.

Spring 2023 simulcasts on Funimation
We may have already mourned Funimation, but it’s taking a long time to die. Despite former competitor Crunchyroll moving all new simulcasts to its own platform, there are still a few continuing simulcasts left on the soon-to-be-defunct Funimation site.
We don’t know when Crunchyroll will officially shut down Funimation, but if you prefer its interface and don’t mind a few unresolved bugs and a much smaller collection of simulcasts, here’s what you can get with a subscription.

Spring 2023 simulcasts on Hulu
Hulu hosts some of Crunchyroll’s dubbed content, which makes it a good streaming service option for casual fans who just want to watch the most popular recent anime. Starting in Spring 2023, though, Hulu’s also adding non-Crunchyroll content that it licenses through Disney. The first of these titles will be Heavenly Delusion*, with several more titles to follow later in 2023.
Discoverability on Hulu is pretty abysmal, and it’s not always clear where the currently airing simulcasts are and when to expect new ones. Have no worries—we did the research for you. You can also visit Hulu’s buried simulcast page to see what’s new.
*Heavenly Delusion is also known by its Japanese title, Tengoku Daimakyo, which is what you have to search in order to find it on Hulu. It’s not clear why the platform chose not to use the English name.

Spring 2023 simulcasts on Netflix
Barring a few exceptions, Netflix doesn’t usually do weekly releases, preferring instead to dump content in anticlimactic bursts. We’re still waiting for Netflix to realize it’d be more successful if its shows remained in the public consciousness for more than a week.
That doesn’t mean you should miss out on those anime drops, though—here’s what you can expect this season.
New simulcasts on Netflix
- Ultraman (Season 3, May 11)
- Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King (movie premiere, June 16)
Other anime recently added to Netflix
- Vinland Saga Season 2
Spring 2023 simulcasts on Disney+
Does Disney+ have anime? Well, not if you live in the US.
Rumor has it that Disney+ is looking to join the anime game with a few new original titles in 2023. Unfortunately for American Disney+ subscribers, these are streaming “worldwide”—which seems to mean “everywhere but here.”
The good news is that these new Disney-distributed titles will be available to stream on Hulu in the US. Maybe Disney just has more streaming services than it knows what to do with.
Upcoming simulcasts on Disney+ (Hulu in the US)
- Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyo)
- SYNDUALITY
- PHOENIX: EDEN17
- Murai no Koi
- Project BULLET/BULLET
- Dragons of Wonderhatch
Spring 2023 anime movies in theaters
Sometimes an anime is just too big to be contained by a streaming service. 2023 will see new releases from quite a few major studios, including Studio Trigger (Gridman Universe, March 24) and Studio Ghibli (How Do You Live, July 14).
Unfortunately, those two films are coming to theaters only in Japan, but we’ll keep this page up to date when we hear more about U.S. release dates.
The good news is that a few new anime movies have already made their way to the states—including Tsurune, a compilation film of the anime series, Suzume, a new film from the director of Your Name and Weathering With You, and Lonely Castle in the Mirror, a fantasy story based on the novel of the same name.
Studio Ghibli fans will be happy to hear that Fathom Events is hosting another Studio Ghibli Fest in 2023, meaning you can catch your favorite Ghibli hits throughout the year. Most films are showing for only a couple of days, so make sure you plan ahead!
Upcoming anime theatrical releases
- Tsurune (April 9)
- Suzume (April 13)
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (June 9)
- Kiki’s Delivery Service (June 11)
- Lonely Castle in the Mirror (June 21)
