Winter 2023 anime highlights

You can expect a lot of isekai (Japanese for “another world”) and fantasy anime this season, and honestly, we’re not complaining. Between A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized and The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, we’re just wondering how much longer these light novel–inspired titles are going to get.

There’s also a lot of anime returning for a second season, including The Misfit of Demon King Academy, In/Spectre, and Vinland Saga. In fact, it’s a good season for long-running shows: Bungo Stray Dogs is on its fourth season, My Hero Academia is on its sixth, and One Piece’s final arc seemingly has no end. Can we get some of that renewal energy for animated shows here in the States?

Here are a few new and returning titles we’re looking forward to this season.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. Season 2

You know those videos of Luigi winning Mario Party by doing absolutely nothing? This show is like that.

In the first season, newbie gamer Maple quickly rose to online gaming fame with her unusual strategy of soaking up damage and eating her way into extremely OP abilities. It’s a bit like a low-stakes, cozy version of Sword Art Online.

The second season promises even more crazy power-ups as Maple continues to rise through the ranks of New World Online, and we’re excited to see what kind of quests she embarks on next.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. Season 2 airs Wednesdays on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

Buddy Daddies

When you’re a skilled assassin, you don’t have the luxury of a personal life. Everything you do puts your loved ones in danger, so you have to do the responsible thing and be alone, not even allowing yourself to take in a stray cat.

At least that’s what protagonist Kazuki thinks, until one day he and his roommate Rei accidentally adopt a target’s four-year-old daughter. Follow the Buddy Daddies’ chaotic attempts to find that work/life balance, surviving rounds of literal gunfire while their new daughter obliviously stumbles her way into trouble.

Just don’t compare it to Spy x Family unless you want to start weird internet drama.

Buddy Daddies airs Fridays on Crunchyroll.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

Horror fans, this is your anime. It was made for you.

This animated adaptation brings the work of horror manga artist Junji Ito to a larger audience, taking twenty of his beloved stories and giving them color and a full voice cast.

Since airing in full on January 19, the show has already garnered a lot of criticism from fans online. The show is in a different art style than Ito’s work, which does take away a lot of charm from the original. (Of course, by “charm,” we mean gut-wrenching dread).

That said, it’s worth watching anyway, whether it inspires new fans to pick up Ito’s original comics or old fans to reminisce about the stories that shaped them.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is currently streaming on Netflix.

Winter 2023 simulcasts on HIDIVE

HIDIVE, Crunchyroll’s main competitor in the “dedicated anime streaming service” space, doesn’t have a huge library. But there are some gems in there, and it’s worth checking if the show you want is a HIDIVE exclusive.

New simulcasts on HIDIVE

  • Tsurune – The Linking Shot
  • Spy Classroom
  • My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog.
  • Farming Life in Another World
  • Giant Beasts of ARS
  • Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte
  • Ippon again!
  • Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible
  • Cardfight!! Vanguard will+Dress Season 2

New anime highlight: Spy Classroom

Seven spies-in-training have a month to train for an impossible mission—but their instructor is better at spycraft than teaching. It’s kind of like Top Gun: Maverick with anime girls. Spy Classroom airs Thursdays on HIDIVE.

Continuing simulcasts on HIDIVE

  • The Eminence in Shadow
  • LUPIN ZERO
  • Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Cour 2
  • Urusei Yatsura Season 2

Winter 2023 simulcasts on Funimation

We may have already mourned Funimation, but it’s taking a long time to die. Despite former competitor Crunchyroll moving all new simulcasts to its own platform, there are still a few continuing simulcasts left on the soon-to-be-defunct Funimation site.

We don’t know when Crunchyroll will officially shut down Funimation, but if you prefer its interface and don’t mind a few unresolved bugs and a much smaller collection of simulcasts, here’s what you can get with a subscription.

New simulcasts on Funimation

Continuing simulcasts on Funimation

  • One Piece
  • My Hero Academia
  • BOFURI
  • By the Grace of the Gods
  • The Vampire Dies in No Time
  • D4DJ First Mix

Continuing anime highlight: My Hero Academia

Put simply, My Hero Academia is the Sky High series you always wanted. Wannabe hero Deku is gifted with superpowers so he can achieve his dream of enrolling in UA, a high school for superheroes. The current season follows the hero kids as they battle the Paranormal Liberation Front led by villain Tomura Shigaraki. My Hero Academia airs Saturdays on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu.

Winter 2023 simulcasts on Hulu

Hulu may not have Crunchyroll’s big library, but it makes all of the most popular anime accessible to a large audience with a familiar UI. If you can find it on merch at the mall, it’s usually on Hulu.

Discoverability on Hulu is pretty abysmal, and it’s not always clear where the currently airing simulcasts are and when to expect new ones. Have no worries—we did the research for you. You can also visit Hulu’s buried simulcast page to see what’s new.

Current simulcasts on Hulu

  • BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. Season 2
  • TRIGUN STAMPEDE
  • My Hero Academia
  • BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS
  • Tokyo Revengers
  • Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War
  • By the Grace of the Gods
  • Attack on Titan Season 4, Final Chapters Part 1

New anime highlight: TRIGUN STAMPEDE

This remix of the original Trigun story from the ‘90s is great for new and old fans alike. It follows a pacifist gunslinger with a bounty on his head, reimagined in beautiful 3D. We’re also obsessed with some of the character names; “Millions Knives” is a particular highlight. TRIGUN STAMPEDE airs Saturdays on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

New dubbed anime on Hulu

  • Summer Time Rendering (2022)

Anime airing live with Hulu + Live TV and premium channels

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS (Disney XD)
  • Beyblade Burst (Disney XD)
  • Dragon Ball Super: Broly (STARZ ENCORE)
  • My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission (STARZ)

Winter 2023 simulcasts on Netflix

Netflix doesn’t run a lot of simulcasts, since most of its content is dropped in huge batches. Until they change their ways, we’ll have to settle for full season drops with underwhelming internet hype (sigh).

Here’s what you can expect this season.
