Over 36 years after Top Gun hit theaters, Tom Cruise returned as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. The long-awaited sequel comes from filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Only the Brave and Tron: Legacy.
All these years later, Maverick is merely a test pilot in the U.S. Navy. But the flying ace soon finds his way back to the TOPGUN program at the order of an old friend. Now, Maverick must prep an elite group of graduates for a challenging mission.

Is Top Gun: Maverick in theaters?
You can still catch Top Gun: Maverick in some theaters. While Paramount Pictures released the film on May 27, 2022, it’s been a major success at the box office—prolonging its stay in cinemas for months.
During the weekend of August 12, Paramount expanded the film’s theatrical release for special “fan appreciation” screenings. Behind-the-scenes footage accompanied the film as the studio celebrated its box office reign.
The movie also had a successful run on IMAX screens. In some cities, you can still find select showings of Top Gun: Maverick on IMAX and other premium large format (PLF) screens.

Top Gun: Maverick features a mission with many parallels to the ariel Death Star attack from the original Star Wars film. The similarities aren’t so shocking if you consider the types of war films that influenced George Lucas. But maybe we’re overthinking things, and Maverick is simply one with the Force.

Hot Shots! (1991)
From one-third of the directing team behind Airplane! and Top Secret!, Hot Shots! is a Top Gun parody that knows the assignment. It stars a pre–Tiger Blood Charlie Sheen as U.S. Navy pilot Sean “Topper” Harley, who’s summoned back to active duty for a secret mission. Comedic hijinks ensue, spoofing other films like Rocky and Superman.
