Personally, I prefer to watch HBO content through the Max app because I don’t have a cable plan, and I tend to want to watch things on my own schedule.

But if you do have a TV plan, the live HBO channel can be a great way to avoid having to find that tiny Roku or Fire TV remote before a live House of the Dragon watch party.

Luckily, if you subscribe to Max through your cable or satellite plan, you get access to HBO alongside your regular channel lineup.

But what channel number is HBO? I’ve done the hard part and assembled HBO’s channel numbers for 50+ of the biggest U.S. cities. Hopefully, this can help you get watching faster!

What channel is HBO on in my area?

There are two main HBO channels: HBO and HBO Pacific. This is similar to the East and West naming conventions of other premium channels, with regular HBO airing shows at times convenient for people living on the East Coast. But based on your location, you might only get one or the other.

In the areas where customers can get both channels, I’ve included both numbers separated by a forward slash.

If you don’t see your location on this list and can’t find the nearest city, try scrolling to channel 300 or 500 on your channel guide. HBO is likely to be hiding out somewhere around there.

Get HBO with cable or satellite TV

HBO is one of the oldest premium TV channels, so it’s available as an add-on through most cable and satellite providers. Some even bundle it in with existing plans; DIRECTV includes HBO (and Max) with its Premier package and Spectrum includes HBO free with certain cable plans.

Can I get HBO with my live TV streaming service?

Some live TV streaming services offer HBO or Max as an add-on, but some don’t. (Unfortunately, you won’t find HBO on Fubo.) Here are some of the biggest live TV streaming services that do offer HBO.

Does Max come with live HBO?

A Max subscription gets you access to a lot of HBO content on demand, including any new episodes of HBO shows. However, only the Standard and Premium plans come with live channels like B/R Sports, CNN, and HBO.

It seems a bit counterintutitive: How can the HBO streaming service not always come with HBO? But Max’s lowest-tier plan, Basic with Ads, doesn’t include live HBO. It’s probably because the HBO channel is famously ad-free, and the Basic tier needs to be able to shove ads in your face at inopportune times.
