Where to watch Child’s Play (1988)

In Chucky’s debut, mortally wounded serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses voodoo to possess a Good Guy doll, the year’s Hot New Toy. Andy Barclay’s mother buys Chucky from a homeless man, thinking it’s the holiday score of the year—but, uh, yeah . . . Everybody looked at My Buddy dolls and Cabbage Patch Kids differently after this one. Directed by Tom Holland, who co-wrote with series creator Don Mancini and John Lafia.

Where to watch Child’s Play 2 (1990)

“Sorry, Jack—Chucky’s back!” In true capitalist fashion, the Play Pals corporation trots out its intellectual property, the Good Guy doll, hoping people have short memories. They don’t (it’s been only two years)—and neither does Chucky, who also stages a comeback. He goes after Andy Barclay, who’s living in foster care with Jenny Agutter (An American Werewolf in London) and her family. John Lafia (RIP) directs.

Where to watch Child’s Play 3 (1991)

Resurrected once again by Play Pals, Chucky follows Andy to military school, and Chucky does what Chucky does best. Directed by Jack Bender (best known as lead director and executive producer of Lost).

Where to watch Bride of Chucky (1998)

In the fourth film, the first to abandon the Child’s Play moniker, Charles Lee Ray’s buxom ex-girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) resurrects him. After some trouble in paradise, Chucky bumps Tiffany off and voodoos her into a doll of her own. They hitch a ride to New Jersey, where they hope to find a magic trinket that’ll make them flesh again, leaving a trail of bodies along the way. Ronny Yu (Freddy vs. Jason) directs.

Where to watch Seed of Chucky (2004)

First comes love, then comes marriage (Bride of Chucky), then comes Glen/Glenda. Upon learning he’s the offspring of Chucky and Tiffany, Glen/Glenda resurrects them and they hatch a plan to become human again—while also spilling tons of blood. Chucky creator (and Chucky series creator/director) Don Mancini directs this one and its two follow-ups, Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017).

Where to watch Curse of Chucky (2013)

Although a direct-to-video release (in the U.S.), Curse of Chucky resurrected the Child’s Play/Chucky series. The film introduces a new protagonist/final girl in the paraplegic Nica Pierce (played by Fiona Dourif, daughter of Brad) for this and the next film in the series, Cult of Chucky.

Where to watch Cult of Chucky (2017)

Released direct to home video and Netflix, Cult of Chucky finds Nica in a mental hospital after getting blamed for the killings of the previous film. Tiffany drops off a Good Guy doll, and Chucky does his thing—only this time, he can inhabit multiple bodies (hence, Cult). Alex Vincent returns as Andy Barclay (after his cameo in Curse).

Where to watch Child’s Play (2019)

Years ahead of (potentially justifiable) AI hysteria, this remake/reboot features Mark Hamill as Chucky, a “Buddi” doll given to Andy Barclay (Gabriel Bateman) by his mother Karen (Aubrey Plaza). This time, instead of trying to kill Andy, Chucky is fiercely protective of the boy—to the point of murder. Directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid).
