Apple TV is Giving Out Free 4K Upgrades to Its Customers

Apple quietly upgrades 49 VOD shows to 4K SDR

These days, it’s rare that a streaming service will provide extra value with no additional cost. Even good changes, like Netflix allowing users to add multiple emails to one account, just meant that Netflix could send twice as many promotional emails (as I realized shortly after signing up).

But I can’t quite find the catch here: Apple TV is quietly upgrading nearly 50 VOD shows to 4K for all customers who’ve already purchased them. Maybe the catch is that these shows should have been 4K all along. After all, Apple first introduced 4K movies to its storefront in 2017, but has noticeably dragged its feet on 4K TV shows.

But whatever the reason, if you own any one of the following shows on Apple TV—that’s Apple’s VOD service, not the streaming subscription, even though they have the same name—you’ll now have access to them in 4K, with no additional charge. Keep reading for the full list.

4K shows on Apple TV: the full list

Looking at the list below, you might notice something. None of these are Apple Originals.

That’s because those titles, if applicable, already have 4K support through the Apple TV subscription-based streaming service formerly known as Apple TV+. This change is for select VOD titles through Apple TV’s storefront, which doesn’t require a subscription.
