New Streaming This Week (July 6, 2026): ‘Ghost in the Shell,’ ‘The Westies,’ and ‘Backrooms’ Top the List

The best new streaming this week includes cyberpunk anime, an Irish mob drama, a horror movie built on an internet legend, and more.

Whether you’re looking for prestige drama, a genre-bending anime reboot, or a surprise-hit horror film best watched with the lights off, this week’s new streaming releases have you covered. Here are three picks we think are worth your time July 6–12.

New on Prime Video this week

“Ghost in the Shell” | Prime Video | Anime, Tuesday, July 7

One of the most influential sci-fi properties of the last 30 years is back as a TV series. “Ghost in the Shell” arrives on Prime Video Tuesday, July 7, produced by Science SARU, the award-winning animation studio behind “Dandadan.”

The franchise’s track record across manga, film, and live-action speaks for itself, but this new series hits differently in 2026. (Its anxiety about tech and identity feels less like science fiction and more like Tuesday.)

New on MGM+ this week

“The Westies” | MGM+ | Series premiere, Sunday, July 12, 9:00 p.m. ET

From “Narcos” creator Chris Brancato, “The Westies” dramatizes the real Irish organized crime gang that clawed out a foothold in 1980s Hell’s Kitchen — outnumbered 50-to-1 by the Italian mob, but ferocious enough to earn a seat at the table anyway.

Icon J.K. Simmons (“Juno,” “Whiplash”) and Titus Welliver (“Deadwood,” “Bosch”) lead the cast on MGM+. If prestige crime drama is your thing, we think this one’s for you.

New on VOD this week

“Backrooms” (2026) | VOD | Horror, available Tuesday, July 7

Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms” — adapted from his viral YouTube Shorts — follows characters who get lost and hunted in the eerie, liminal rooms hidden beneath an ordinary furniture store.

The less you know walking in, the better the payoff. “Backrooms” is available to rent starting July 7 on Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Movies & TV, and Prime Video.
