Spectrum introduces multiview for the first time

For years, Spectrum TV has been the odd man out in the multiview game.

But no more.

Spectrum on Monday announced it would introduce its own multiview feature just in time for the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament, which starts in earnest on Thursday, March 19.

“The NCAA Tournament is the perfect time for basketball fans to experience the thrill of multiple games at once,” Elena Ritchie, Spectrum senior vice president of video product, said in a statement. “Multiview is all about making it easier for customers to catch every highlight and stay connected to the action.”

College basketball fans will be able to watch up to four games at once via the Spectrum TV App. The app is available on multiple devices, including Xumo Stream Box, Xumo TV, Apple TV, Roku, and Xbox, as well as on Samsung, LG, and Vizio smart TVs.

Spectrum customers must have a TV plan that includes March Madness channels like TBS, TNT, truTV, and the ESPN suite. Most of those channels are available on the Select Signature plan, but the Platinum plan offers all of them.

Spectrum says it plans to expand its multiview feature to cover other major sporting events such as the NBA and NHL playoffs and World Cup, NFL, and college football games.

How Spectrum multiview compares to others

At this time, Spectrum’s multiview feature isn’t customizable. In other words, if you wanted to watch two men’s March Madness games alongside two women’s March Madness games, you couldn’t do that with this feature.

Spectrum’s multiview is curated, allowing viewers to “watch either all the men’s tournament games going at any given moment, or all the women’s games going on at any given moment,” per a Spectrum spokesperson.

The way Spectrum does multiview is essentially the same as DIRECTV and ESPN Unlimited—plenty of options, but all predetermined for the viewer.

Other TV providers simply have better multiview features. YouTube TV’s is much more customizable and has supported mixed gender multiviews since last year. The company announced in January that its multiview will soon be “fully customizable.”
