‘The Wheel of Time’ Returns From Cancellation With a New Animated Series and More

One more turning of the Wheel

Amazon Prime Video‘s “Wheel of Time” series was a banger. I was super disappointed to hear it got cancelled after three seasons, even if that’s more than a lot of series get nowadays. I’ve never read the books the series was based on, but I really got invested in the fantasy worldbuilding and wanted to see more of the characters.

Fortunately, Amazon doesn’t get to decide what happens next for the fantasy franchise. iwot Studios, which owns the rights to the IP, does. And they’ve got big plans for Rand al’Thor and company.

Let’s dive into all of the projects we know about so far.

New ‘The Wheel of Time’ animated projects

The recent announcement from iwot Studios included an animated series and an unknown number of animated feature films. What’s really getting fans excited is the producer behind the initiative—Thomas Vu. Vu also produced the award-winning “League of Legends” adaptation, “Arcane,” for Netflix, and his involvement hints at a “Wheel of Time” adaptation of a similar caliber.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Vu said he plans on “expanding ‘The Wheel of Time’ into fully authentic, integrated, interactive, and animated storytelling experiences. The depth of the mythology provides a foundation for sustained, multi-platform franchise growth.”

Which, uh, sure is a way to describe “cool new animated fantasy series” in the most opaque and corporate way possible. Will the projects be 3D or 2D? Will they take visual cues from “Arcane?” Will the live-action cast be involved at all? iwot is keeping the details close to its proverbial chest for the time being.

A new ‘The Wheel of Time’ video game

iwot Studios just announced its intention to make a “Wheel of Time” game for PC and mobile, although it’s not clear what genre the game would be.

As a certified gamer, hearing that something is going to be a crossover between PC and mobile makes me skeptical. It calls to mind projects like “Infinity Nikki” and “Fortnite”—live-service games infamous for their microtransactions. I’d much rather pay $20–$40 for a quality PC game than download a free-to-play game with an infinite number of add-ons or subscriptions.

I’m personally more excited for an older project: the “Wheel of Time” open-world RPG that iwot announced last May. iwot clarified to Variety that the new PC/mobile game is “in addition” to the open-world RPG, and would not be replacing it.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more updates regarding the animated series and the open-world RPG—that is, assuming iwot can refrain from messing it all up with AI slop.
